Job Summary

In alignment with community engagement values and a commitment to supporting student success, the Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, & Community Engagement provides basic needs resources through the Bruin Pantry Network. Bruin Pantry Specialists report to the Manager of the Bruin Pantry Network and support general pantry operations, including receiving, processing, stocking, transporting, and distributing food and hygiene products to students, faculty, and staff. Specialists assist with inventory management, including lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds, and are responsible for driving large-capacity vehicles to transport food, supplies, and other inventory between pantry locations. Additional responsibilities include taking inventory, purchasing or rescuing food from local stores, and assessing resource needs across pantry locations. Specialists clearly communicate pantry policies and information while providing welcoming and professional customer service to pantry visitors. Successful candidates should be strong communicators who work collaboratively with pantry staff, pantry peer leaders, and community partners and demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to equitable access to basic needs resources.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to regularly lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds, often on a daily basis.
  • Willingness and ability to drive large-capacity vehicles on a weekly basis to transport food stock, supplies, and other materials between pantry locations and community partners.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with SLCC offices, Thayne Center colleagues, peer leaders, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as Zoom and other telecommunications platforms. Ability to learn and effectively use technology and software systems required for pantry operations, including inventory and data tracking.
  • Ability to track expenses, maintain accurate records, and follow established budgets.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing priorities and circumstances.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally in person, during meetings, through email, and by phone.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from a broad range of backgrounds and maintain positive working relationships across Salt Lake Community College.
  • Professionalism and strong work ethics, including dependability, timeliness, trustworthiness, accountability, and respect for others.
  • Ability to receive and apply constructive feedback.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and manage competing demands.
  • Ability to document and appropriately address performance concerns involving student peer leaders.
  • Experience with or interest in one or more of the following areas:
  • Nutrition, healthy eating, food systems, sustainability, public health, nonprofit administration
  • Social and behavioral sciences, including psychology, sociology, education, and social work.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties?

  • Must be able to work 26 to 29 hours per week.
  • Ensure pantries follow Utah Food Bank and community partners operational standards.
  • Regularly lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • When possible, use provided departmental Large Capacity Passenger Vehicle.
  • Transport food supplements and hygiene products across the pantry network on a weekly basis.
  • This position requires driving to multiple campuses and may require starting the day at varying campus locations.
  • Authorized driver's must be over 21 and maintain a valid Utah Driver's license.
  • Assist in overseeing the daily operations of pantry locations.
  • Take regular inventory of food availability at an assigned pantry location (Taylorsville Redwood, South City, West Valley Center, Jordan, and/or Herriman Campus).
  • Communicate missing food groups to supervisor and plan restocking strategies.
  • Stock pantries with food supplements from purchases, donations, pantry relocation, and food rescue program.
  • Order and purchase food supplements and hygiene products to ensure well-stocked and dietary relevant resources.
  • Uphold responsibilities outlined in the cardholder agreement and purchasing card training.
  • Uphold authorization responsibilities outlined by motor pool and SLCC's Risk Management Department.
  • Exhibit positive customer service and relationship building when interacting with pantry visitors and pantry peer leaders.
  • During academic breaks and finals, supplement coverage during pantry distributions.
  • Ethical budget discretion is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work 26-29 hours a week.
  • Ability to work during the following shifts:?Monday 19:30am-4:30pm, Tuesday 8am-4:30pm, Wednesday 10am-4:30pm & Thursday 10am-4:30pm
  • Ability to uphold authorization responsibilities outlined by motor pool and SLCC's Risk Management Agreement.
  • At least 21 years old
  • Valid UT?drivers license
  • Lift 50lbs and make repetitive movements
  • Has reliable transportation
