    The School District of Waukesha is seeking qualified candidates to apply for a Special Education Assistant (Benefit Eligible) position at Waukesha STEM Academy. The Waukesha STEM Academy is housed in a brand new K-8 campus where hands-on and project-based learning are an essential component of our students'' educational experience. Students learn by innovating and creating, while collaboratively building the future!

    The Special Education Assistant will assist the Special Education Teacher in meeting the diversified needs of students with various disabilities in the elementary classroom. As a part of this assignment, you will be required to assist in classroom modifications, communicate effectively with regular and special education staff, provide structure and feedback, and work with other students as assigned. You will work collaboratively with the teacher(s) to coordinate and implement care and assistance according to an Individualized Education Plan.

    Examples of duties may include, but not be limited to the following:

    • With collaborative planning with the special team, help lead appropriate classroom activities.
    • Complete other organizational and clerical tasks requested by the Special Ed. team and classroom teacher(s) such as helping to make copies, cutting, or assistance with classroom projects.
    • Assist the classroom teacher in reinforcing classroom guidelines and procedures.
    • Supervise students in the lunch room and/or on the playground before/after lunch.
    • Enforce school rules in the lunchroom, hallways and playground.
    • Assist students in obtaining lunch from the lunch lines, when additional support is needed.
    • Ensure the safety of students.
    • Convey the content of messages clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student.
    • Assist in communication throughout the school day in a variety of settings as outlined in the IEP.
    • At the direction of the teacher, work on academic, communication, social, and self-help skills.
    • Assist the teacher in providing instructional activities and reinforcement.
    • Physically assist with students including lifting and transfers as needed.
    • At the direction of the school nurse and as documented in the student''s health plan, attend to the students'' health needs.
    • Assist with personal care procedures as needed for students (ex. dressing, toileting, feeding, etc.)

    Attendance is an essential function of this position.
