About Us

CARITAS creates a safe space to heal and time to rebuild. Our five programs provide solutions for shelter, recovery services, workforce development, and the furniture bank.

 

TheCARITAS Emergency Shelter, as of the five programs of this thriving non-profit, provides compassionate hospitality to those experiencing homelessness in our region. Services are offered to both men and women on our Richmond campuses and basic needs such as shelter, meals, clothing, and connections to supportive services are provided. We take an integrated approach to helping people solve their housing crisis by connecting them with a housing specialist. This position provides supervision and guidance in the shelter environment and works alongside housing specialists, volunteers, and other CARITAS staff.

 

Position Summary:

The Case Manager supports participants in the Emergency Shelter program in obtaining stability by addressing barriers to housing, accessing community resources, and connecting to wrap around services.

  • Embrace a culture of compassionate care by providing supportive services that are trauma informed.
  • Manage all referrals coming into shelter, complete all shelter intakes and orient new intakes to our program and guidelines.
  • Create a person-centered individual service plan for each participant using the using a "housing first" lens and meet with participants one on one to monitor and assist in their progress.
  • Make referrals to community resources as need (and/or as available) to aid participants in addressing barriers to housing.
  • Act as a liaison for participants connected to outside programming.
  • Support participants in obtaining identification documentation.
  • Facilitate internal case conferencing and participate in community case conferencing to discuss hard to serve participants.
  • Research housing and job trends in Richmond, manage weekly housing and job lists and assist participants with applications when needed.
  • Make internal check requests for housing funding and collaborate with Shelter Director monthly regarding self-resolution budget.
  • Participate in Emergency Shelter on-call schedule.
  • Participate in internal and community trainings and meetings as assigned.
  • Facilitate interns and volunteers, as assigned.
  • Report on outcomes monthly.
  • Provide support and guidance to shelter staff when senior most leadership staff onsite.
  • Collaborate with shelter leadership team to strengthen the mission and vision of the shelter.

 

Qualifications:

  • Solid professional and effective communication skills.
  • Robust attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Trained in de-escalation, trauma informed care, and a person-centered approach.
  • Ability to hold compassionate, confidentiality, and professional boundaries, including know-how and capacity to come along side individuals with high needs.
  • Familiarity with homeless services in Richmond and other community resources.
  • Bachelor's degree required, Social Work/Human Services field desired or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Certified Housing Counselor a plus. Experience and comfort working with individuals with serious mental illness with a trauma-informed lens.
  • Experience with real estate, the Fair Housing Act, Landlord-Tenant Act, Americans with Disabilities Act a plus.
  • Ability use Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs; experience with data collection and reporting.
  • Valid T.B. test within 2 weeks of being hired.
  • Current CPR and Naloxone certification required within 1 month of being hired.

Salary: $45,000 - $60,000 depending on experience
