Job OverviewThe Senior Property Accountant is a senior-level Property Accountant responsible for managing the books and accounting activities for ML Property Group. This position is responsible for accurate and timely property and corporate accounting, while providing day-to-day guidance and support to other Property Accountants and Accounts Payable personnel. The Senior Property Accountant reports to the VP of Accounting, who oversees the overall accounting department.Job SummaryManage the day-to-day accounting and books for ML Property Group.Serve as a senior accounting resource for Property Accountants, Accounts Payable, and property operations.Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for assigned properties.Prepare and post monthly journal entries, accruals, reclasses, and adjusting entries.Prepare and review weekly cash balance summaries and AP reports.Post and reconcile property debt service payments and payroll-related accounting entries.Review bank reconciliations, petty cash reconciliations, and other account reconciliations and research outstanding items.Reconcile loan activity and ensure debt-related transactions are accurately recorded.Handle and/or review company payroll accounting, including payroll entries, allocations, and related reconciliations.Record and reconcile 401 (k) contributions, employer matches, and related employee benefit activity.Assist with year-end close, tax audits, financial audits, and preparation of adjusting entries.Assist Directors of Operations, Property Managers, and other associates with accounting questions, income and expense reclasses, and other property accounting needs.Review accounting work as needed and provide guidance to Property Accountants and Accounts Payable personnel.Help ensure accounting procedures, deadlines, and internal controls are consistently followed.Identify discrepancies and accounting issues and work with the appropriate team members to resolve them.Support the VP of Accounting with accounting projects and other responsibilities as needed.Knowledge & Abilities RequiredBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.Minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting experience with significant multifamily/property accounting experience.Strong understanding of multifamily property accounting and financial statements.Extensive knowledge of accounting procedures, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and month-end close.Experience with company payroll accounting and payroll-related reconciliations.Experience recording and reconciling 401 (k) activity preferred.Strong attention to detail and ability to research and resolve accounting discrepancies.Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Ability to manage multiple properties, deadlines, and priorities independently.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to provide direction, training, and support to less-tenured accounting team members.Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting systems; OneSite experience a plus.Supervisory / Leadership ResponsibilityThis position does not oversee the entire accounting department. The Senior Property Accountant serves as a senior member of the accounting team and provides day-to-day guidance, review, training, and support to Property Accountants and Accounts Payable personnel as directed by the VP of Accounting. The VP of Accounting maintains overall responsibility for the accounting department.
