Senior OT Data Specialist (remote)
Industrial Data | PI Historian | SCADA | SQL
FocusPoint is recruiting a Senior OT Data Specialist for a client seeking an experienced professional who can connect industrial operations, operational technology, engineering, and modern data and analytics environments.
This is not a traditional Data Engineer or software development position. The ideal candidate understands industrial processes and equipment, knows how operational data is generated and captured, and can work hands on with historian and time series data to determine whether information is accurate, complete, and ready for analytics and AI applications.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a subject matter expert for operational technology, historian, and industrial time series data
- Work extensively with AVEVA/OSIsoft PI Historian, including PI tags, tag attributes, engineering units, timestamps, sampling frequency, compression, interpolation, and historical behavior
- Partner with Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability, Instrumentation, OT, Data Engineering, Analytics, and Data Science teams
- Identify and validate operational signals needed for reporting, analytics, predictive maintenance, optimization, and AI initiatives
- Use P&IDs, PFDs, asset hierarchies, and engineering documentation to connect instruments and data with physical equipment and processes
- Investigate unusual data and help determine whether issues originate with instrumentation, historian data, operational conditions, or downstream data processes
- Use SQL and Databricks to query, analyze, validate, and troubleshoot operational datasets
- Assess data availability, history, sampling frequency, equipment context, and overall readiness for advanced analytics
- Help identify missing instrumentation, gaps in tag coverage, stale signals, outliers, data quality issues, and unresolved equipment mappings
- Connect operational data with relevant asset, maintenance, and enterprise information
- Support adoption of specialized industrial data quality technology and develop subject matter expertise in the platform
- Document validated data definitions, equipment mappings, assumptions, limitations, and findings
What We're Looking For
- 7+ years of experience in oil and gas, refining, midstream, petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, or a comparable process industry
- Extensive hands on experience with AVEVA/OSIsoft PI Historian and industrial time series data
- Thorough understanding of PI tags, instrumentation, process measurements, data history, and asset context
- Experience working with DCS/SCADA and OT environments
- Practical understanding of industrial equipment and processes such as pumps, compressors, pipelines, tanks, vessels, or processing units
- Ability to interpret P&IDs and PFDs
- Experience working directly with Operations, Process Engineering, Reliability, Instrumentation, or OT teams
- Working SQL skills and the ability to independently investigate operational data
- Experience with Databricks or a comparable analytics environment
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex data issues and communicate effectively with both operational and technical teams
Preferred Experience
- Experience across multiple industrial operating environments
- PI Asset Framework and PI Vision
- Industrial automation and control platforms
- SAP Plant Maintenance/EAM or similar maintenance and reliability systems
- Analyzer, laboratory, or other operational data
- Industrial data quality or observability tools
- Predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, digital twins, optimization, or advanced analytics
- Basic Python or PySpark knowledge
