AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, were the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and were looking for talented people who want to help.

Youll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. Youll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And youll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Key Job Responsibilities:

• Manage vendors and manufacturers to assess new fiber optic and passive infrastructure designs, establish fiber testing standards, and develop scalable implementation strategies for network-wide deployment. • Automate fiber test plans and qualify fiber connectivity designs. • Design and specify structured cabling systems (fiber, copper, cable trays/duct banks) for network layers at hyperscale data centers • Develop standards, reference designs, and installation guidelines for physical network/cabling deployments and structured cabling systems • Focus on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new network architecture and systems development initiatives, propose and deliver projects that have a significant business and/or customer impact • Drive discussions with customers and peers, and being a key influencer in team strategy • Partner with internal network engineering and site operations teams to align physical design with logical network architecture • Manage fiber vendors and contractors; perform quality control and commissioning of fiber bundles and structured cabling systems • Perform mitigation analysis and site inspections to validate as-built conditions, ensuring compliance with design and operational requirements • Monitor module quality in the fleet and build mechanism to remediate large scale events and improve health of our links • Troubleshoot and resolve issues during build, commissioning, and handover phases to ensure network readiness • Maintain documentation, drawings, and asset records for physical network components across global sites • Provide feedback to design and operations teams to drive continuous improvement of physical network standards

A Day in the Life:

On an everyday basis as an engineer or scientist in our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers requirement on interconnect solutions, and work backwards to devise hardware solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with partner teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.

Youll bridge design, construction, and operations, ensuring that every layer of physical networking-from fiber trunks to copper patching -meets high standards of performance, reliability, and scalability.

About the Team:

Within AWS Networking, the Network Product Development (NPD) organization is responsible for designing the hardware, building the software, and owning the interconnects for the routers that power the global AWS network. Beyond product delivery, we actively manage the fleet or routers in a network that grows by 70% annually. This means tracking key business and operational metrics to ensure that we operate smoothly and minimize or eliminate customer impact due to device related issues for a transparent AWS customer experience.

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
