The Classification and Compensation unit supports a variety of campus-wide human resources activities on position management and classification to include consultation, position design, position classification, compensation analysis, training, and administration of classification programs for the university. The unit has responsibility for coordinating decisions for the effective design and delivery of competitive compensation program to meet university needs and serves as the university's principal wage and hour office. Classification and Compensation provides support and direction on a variety of salary administration policies and best practices to maintain fair and equitable classification and salary decisions for the university's workforces. The unit maintains the integrity of the State of North Carolina's career banding program, University System EHRA classification program, as well as the Department of Labor's prescribed Fair Labor Standards Act regulations in combination with other federal, state, and local policies and regulations.
Primary Purpose of Position
UNC Charlotte is seeking a highly skilled, independent, and strategic Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant to drive excellence across the university's workforce infrastructure. In this pivotal role, the Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant balances deep regulatory expertise with proactive campus partnership, focusing heavily on sophisticated compensation and job analysis. This involves independently evaluating complex position classifications, determining FLSA and SHRA/EHRA exemption statuses, performing market and internal equity reviews, and providing vital organizational design recommendations. Additionally, the Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant serves as a trusted advisor to administrators, faculty, and HR partners on effective job design, resolving sensitive or unprecedented compensation challenges through targeted research, and offering guidance and mentorship to fellow team members.
Beyond daily analysis and consultation, the Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant ensures strict compliance with federal, state, and local compensation laws. In this capacity, the Consultant conducts thorough audits, prepares data-driven metrics for leadership, and supports critical cyclical initiatives such as the annual raise process, salary surveys, and UNC System Office reporting. Finally, the Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant leverages communication expertise to mitigate institutional risk and empower campus partners through the development and facilitation of compelling, ongoing training programs and educational workshops. The Senior Classification and Compensation Consultant is responsible for administering and supporting staff classification and compensation programs for the institution in accordance with university policies, applicable state and federal laws, and human resources best practices. Under the direction of the Director of Compensation, Position and Records Management, this position conducts classification and compensation analyses, position evaluations, compensation studies, and salary reviews to support equitable and competitive pay practices across the university. The position applies knowledge of higher education compensation practices and state/public sector classification systems to assist departments with position management and organizational needs.
This position supports compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), applicable state classification and compensation regulations, and institutional policies by reviewing position descriptions, analyzing job duties and responsibilities, and assisting with exemption status determinations and classification recommendations. The consultant provides guidance to campus departments regarding classification and compensation procedures, position management practices, and compensation-related processes to support consistent application of university human resources policies and programs.
