ABOUT THE ROLE

A diversified family-owned holding company is seeking a Tax Manager to oversee sales & use tax and property tax matters across multiple business lines, including equipment leasing, real estate, and hospitality. This role is heavily focused on tax research, review, audit support, and managing outsourced compliance processes.

The ideal candidate will bring strong sales & use tax expertise, experience reviewing tax filings, and the ability to independently manage complex state tax issues in a collaborative, work-life balanced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review sales, use, and property tax returns prepared by external tax providers
  • Analyze monthly tax data and prepare detailed reviews utilizing Excel pivot tables
  • Research state and local tax regulations to determine appropriate tax treatment and filing positions
  • Review lease agreements and supplements to determine proper sales and property tax treatment
  • Ensure exemption certificates are properly maintained and support audit readiness
  • Partner with internal business teams regarding tax implications of equipment sales and leasing transactions
  • Research sales and use tax consequences related to asset sales and remarketing activities
  • Resolve customer and collection-related tax issues and recommend appropriate actions
  • Review and respond to state and local tax notices
  • Coordinate billing and tax chargeback processes to customers and lessees
  • Reconcile tax liabilities, payments, and chargebacks to the general ledger
  • Monitor legislative changes, court cases, and regulatory developments impacting tax positions
  • Serve as the primary liaison for sales/use and property tax audits
  • Assist with preparation of multi-state income tax returns and related schedules
  • Support state and local income tax audits, notices, and compliance activities

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 3+ years of tax experience
  • Strong sales & use tax and property tax experience required
  • Prior experience reviewing tax filings and tax workpapers
  • Ability to research and interpret state and local tax regulations
  • Experience supporting tax audits, notices, and compliance inquiries
  • Strong Excel skills, including advanced use of pivot tables
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently and prioritize competing deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Vertex, OPT Property Tax Software, or similar tax platforms preferred
  • Experience with OneSource Tax Software is a plus
  • Public accounting or industry tax experience welcomed
  • Must be able to commute to a hybrid office environment in New Jersey (3 days onsite)
