The Public Schools of Brookline is seeking a collaborative, creative, and highly organized educator and performing arts professional to serve in a combined 0.9 FTE position consisting of a 0.5 FTE Production Stagecraft & Design Teacher and a 0.4 FTE Performing Arts Technical Director & Educator at Brookline High School.
This position includes teaching courses in stagecraft and theatrical design while also helping run, coordinate, and support technical and production needs across Brookline High School''s Drama, Music, and Dance programs. A key component of this role is working directly with students in production settings, teaching and mentoring them in lighting, sound, stagecraft, and other technical theater skills through hands-on participation in performances throughout the school year. We are seeking a passionate educator and performing arts professional who is committed to providing high-quality instruction, fostering student creativity and leadership, and supporting a vibrant performing arts community that serves nearly 1,000 students annually.
Position Responsibilities
Role 1: Production Stagecraft & Design Teacher (0.5 FTE)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teach Backstage: Power Tools and Special Effects class focused on building sets for school productions and the safe, comprehensive use of power tools and production equipment.
- Teach Design for the Stage class focused on design theory, including scenic, lighting, sound, and costume design.
- Follow and adapt a comprehensive curriculum that meets the needs and interests of students, differentiating instruction to support all learners.
- Assess student learning using a variety of methods.
- Maintain safe and efficient studio and classroom spaces, including the operation of all necessary machines, tools, and equipment.
- Meet regularly with Drama colleagues, attend Performing Arts Department meetings, and participate in the greater school community through meetings and duties as assigned.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.
Role 2: Performing Arts Technical Director & Educator (0.4 FTE)
The Performing Arts Tech Educator supports the technical, production, and operational needs of the Brookline High School Performing Arts Department while helping students develop technical theater and production skills.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Communicate with Performing Arts faculty to understand and anticipate technical and production needs for performances.
- Coordinate the use of Performing Arts Department performance spaces to ensure equitable access and avoid scheduling conflicts.
- Operate and oversee lighting, sound, projection, and related technical systems; provide technical support for selected performances.
- Draft scenic designs as needed in collaboration with directors.
- Lead and assist teams of students to complete all scenic builds.
- Attend all tech week rehearsals, including weekend hours as needed.
- Recruit, train, and supervise student technicians and stage crews in collaboration with faculty.
- Work with directors to coordinate production logistics and strikes.
- Coordinate production-related purchases and services within allocated budgets.
- Monitor and maintain Performing Arts Department equipment, including lighting, sound systems, microphones, projectors, control systems, and related technology; coordinate repairs and maintenance as needed.
- Ensure that all production technical support needs are met.
- Collaborate closely with Drama, Music, and Dance faculty to support performances throughout the school year.
Required Qualifications
- Scenic design, technical theater, and/or production operation skills.
- Experience with theatrical lighting, sound, stagecraft, and related production technologies.
- Ability to teach and supervise the safe use of power tools and production equipment.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and assess learning using a variety of methods.
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and families.
- Reflective practitioner with a growth mindset and willingness to adapt to evolving program and student needs.
- Ability to reflect on personal practice through analysis of teaching, student learning, and feedback from colleagues and supervisors.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty across multiple performing arts disciplines.
- Massachusetts DESE teacher certification in Theater.
- Bachelor''s degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master''s degree.
- Experience teaching theater, stagecraft, design, or related courses.
- Experience directing, stage managing, designing, or providing technical support for theatrical and/or performing arts productions.
- Experience working with high school students in educational or extracurricular settings.
- Experience managing production schedules, budgets, and technical equipment.

The K-12 Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator and the Brookline High School Principal.
