Pharmacy Technician

Austin State Hospital is seeking a qualified Pharmacy Technician to support pharmacy operations, medication preparation, inventory management, medication delivery, inspections, and clerical activities. The Pharmacy Technician will work under limited supervision while exercising initiative and independent judgment within the scope permitted by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP).

The technician must maintain professional, legal, and ethical standards while complying with hospital, HHSC, and TSBP policies, regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain pharmacy inventory, including medication and supply levels.
• Prepare medications for final verification by a licensed pharmacist.
• Deliver medications to designated patient care areas.
• Conduct medication room and medication area inspections.
• Assist pharmacists and other pharmacy staff with technical activities.
• Perform pharmacy-related clerical and administrative duties.
• Provide technical guidance and assistance to other staff as needed.
• Perform manual and automated medication repackaging activities.
• Maintain accurate pharmacy records and documentation.
• Follow applicable medication handling, safety, and storage procedures.
• Comply with Texas State Board of Pharmacy requirements and facility policies.
• Follow all HHSC and Austin State Hospital rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Current Pharmacy Technician registration in good standing with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP).
• Experience performing pharmaceutical assistance work.
• Ability to work independently within the scope of Pharmacy Technician practice.
• Knowledge of pharmacy procedures, medication handling, and inventory management.
• Ability to comply with professional, legal, and ethical standards.
• Must maintain a current and valid Texas Pharmacy Technician registration throughout the assignment.

Preferred Experience

• Pyxis MedStation System
• Medication room inspections
• Manual medication repackaging
• Automated medication repackaging
• Hospital or institutional pharmacy experience

Mandatory Training Requirement

Candidate must be available for 9 consecutive days of training before the resume can be submitted.

• Training schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
• Availability for the complete training period is non-negotiable.
• Candidates who cannot commit to the required training schedule should not be submitted.

Work Schedule

• Monday–Friday
• 7:30 AM–4:30 PM OR 8:30 AM–5:30 PM
• No 12-hour shifts
• Staffing agency personnel generally cannot work more than 40 hours per week unless overtime is individually approved and scheduled by Austin State Hospital.

Contract & Hiring Timeline

• Minimum Contract: 3 months
• Start Date: ASAP
• Qualified submissions: Through October 15, 2026
• Interviews: Through October 15, 2026
• Hiring decisions: On or before October 15, 2026
• All compliance requirements must be completed before the candidate can start.

Compliance Requirements

Candidates must:

• Provide a valid photo ID.
• Provide negative PPD/TB test results within the previous 12 months.
• Complete required urine drug screening.
• Successfully pass the required background check.
• Successfully pass an FBI fingerprint background check.
• Complete all facility and agency compliance requirements.
• Maintain an active Texas Pharmacy Technician registration throughout the assignment.
• COVID-19 testing is desired but not required before starting in-person work; testing is provided by the facility.

Time-Off & Overtime

• No requested time off is currently approved; exceptions may be discussed.
• Overtime is not permitted beyond 40 hours per week unless specifically approved and scheduled by Austin State Hospital.
• Regular rates apply to the position.
