Patient Service Representative – Patient Access Tech (ED)

Job Title: Patient Service Representative / Patient Access Technician
Department: Emergency Department (ED)
Facility: Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) – Main Hospital
Location: 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507
Duration: 13 Weeks
Schedule: Days , 11:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: 5×8-hour shifts
Weekend: Every Other Weekend
Assignment: 13 weeks, with potential for extension and possible permanent hire
Float: No floating to other locations

Job Summary

The Patient Service Representative/Patient Access Technician will support patient registration and access functions within the ED and across CHKD. This role requires strong customer service skills, attention to detail, insurance knowledge, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Greet patients and families in a professional and compassionate manner.

  • Register patients and accurately update demographic and insurance information.

  • Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage.

  • Collect copayments and other applicable payments.

  • Obtain required patient consents through in-person, telephone, and other approved processes.

  • Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record.

  • Complete accurate and timely documentation and registration activities.

  • Process admissions for the hospital, Children's Pavilion, and other CHKD departments as needed.

  • Provide patient access support to various departments throughout CHKD.

  • Navigate multiple computer systems and maintain accurate patient information.

  • Handle challenging situations professionally while maintaining excellent customer service.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.

  • Insurance knowledge is required.

  • Ability to work effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment.

  • Dependable, adaptable, and detail-oriented.

  • Ability to work well with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to handle difficult or sensitive situations professionally.

  • Comfortable working with multiple computer systems.

  • Prior hospital registration or patient access experience is preferred but not required.
