We are seeking an experienced Package Engineer to lead and support packaging development programs from concept through implementation. This role serves as a technical packaging expert on cross-functional project teams and is responsible for developing packaging solutions that meet performance, quality, safety, manufacturing, and business requirements.
The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in packaging engineering, packaging materials, package testing, and packaging systems, with the ability to independently manage moderately complex projects and provide clear technical direction.
Develop and design new packaging solutions for the safe, convenient, and effective transportation and delivery of products.
Develop packaging material standards, specifications, engineering drawings, and technical requirements.
Evaluate existing packaging test methods and develop new testing protocols when needed.
Design and coordinate laboratory testing and plant trials to qualify new packaging materials, designs, and equipment.
Evaluate packaging and transportation methods to ensure compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
Recommend improvements to packaging materials, processes, automation, and packing procedures.
Partner with suppliers to determine appropriate packaging materials and designs based on product characteristics, performance requirements, safety, and special-handling needs.
Provide technical support related to packaging quality, package performance, material supply, and manufacturing requirements.
Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex packaging-related technical issues.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cross-functional project teams.
Support or coordinate activities with contract packaging and labeling sites as needed.
Oversee exterior package design considerations, including product identification, printing appearance, production techniques, and consumer appeal.
Develop realistic project timelines, testing plans, and contingency plans to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
Identify potential project risks and proactively develop solutions.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to co-ops and entry-level engineers.
Strong technical background in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Systems, or a related field.
Solid understanding of packaging materials, applications, testing, specifications, and manufacturing processes.
Experience managing packaging development and qualification projects.
Ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex technical packaging issues.
Experience coordinating laboratory testing, plant trials, and packaging-material qualification.
Strong project-management skills with the ability to manage timelines, budgets, priorities, and technical deliverables.
Ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate issues and develop contingency plans.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while seeking additional technical guidance when appropriate.
