Job Description and Duties

Our contact center prides itself on providing superior customer service to the people of California, through telephone, email, facsimile, in person, and postal mail communications.

Under the direction of the Contact Center Supervisor, (Staff Services Manager I Supervisory), the incumbent serves as the initial point of contact for the Department using the Department's Contact Center software and if applicable, at the district office. The incumbent screens inquiries and assists the general public, submits requests using the Department's case management system and provides sensitive and detailed program information to complainants, respondents, attorneys, the general public, and other interested parties on civil rights pursuant to the Fair Employment and Housing Act, Unruh Civil Rights Act, Ralph Civil Rights Act, and the Disabled Persons Act.

In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025. This program temporarily reduces employees' monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the salary reduction.

Department Information

The Civil Rights Department (CRD or Department) is the civil rights enforcement agency for the State of California. CRD's mission is to protect all people in California from employment, housing and public accommodation discrimination, human trafficking, and hate violence.

CRD is the largest state civil rights enforcement agency in the country. It enforces the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), Unruh Civil Rights Act, Disabled Persons Act, Ralph Civil Rights Act, and the California Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The Department has jurisdiction over both private and public entities operating within the State of California, including corporate entities, private sector companies that contract with the State of California, and all State departments and local governments.

CRD receives, investigates, conciliates, and initiates individual and systemic discrimination complaints in its six offices throughout California. CRD litigates individual, class, group and systemic cases in all California jurisdictions, including state and federal courts. It leads education and outreach efforts to stakeholders and the public, and has an active regulatory and legislative program.

Telework Opportunity:

This position is hybrid and will require in office days to be established with your supervisor in accordance with Department policy. This position is currently required to report to the Sacramento office, 4 days per week.
