Job Title: Nutanix & VMware Infrastructure Engineer

Work Location: 100% Onsite (5 days per week) - New York, NY

Pay Range: $70-$80/hr D.O.E.

Duration: 12+ Months

Position Overview

Our Fortune 500 client located in New York, NY is seeking an experienced Senior Nutanix & VMware Infrastructure Engineer to design, administer, migrate, and support enterprise virtualization, server, storage, and infrastructure environments.

This position has a strong focus on Nutanix administration and VMware-to-Nutanix AHV migrations. The engineer will be responsible for Nutanix cluster deployment and management, VMware vSphere and Nutanix environment design, hypervisor migrations, Windows and Linux server administration, infrastructure monitoring, automation, patching, backup/recovery, and troubleshooting.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on infrastructure engineer with deep Nutanix expertise who can support critical enterprise environments while maintaining high standards for availability, performance, security, disaster recovery, and operational reliability.

Key Responsibilities

Nutanix & Virtualization Engineering

  • Design, implement, administer, maintain, and support enterprise Nutanix environments.
  • Deploy, configure, manage, monitor, and troubleshoot Nutanix clusters.
  • Provide hands-on Nutanix administration and serve as a technical resource for complex platform issues.
  • Plan and execute VMware vSphere migrations to Nutanix AHV using established migration best practices.
  • Assess existing VMware environments and develop migration plans addressing workloads, dependencies, capacity, availability, and operational risk.
  • Design, implement, and support VMware vSphere and Nutanix virtualization environments.
  • Troubleshoot hypervisor, virtual machine, storage, networking, performance, and availability issues.
  • Support hypervisor lifecycle management, upgrades, and migrations.

Server & Operating System Administration

  • Administer and support enterprise Windows Server and Linux operating systems.
  • Manage users, file systems, services, software installations, configurations, and operating-system administration.
  • Support Active Directory, including domain administration, Group Policy configuration, backup, and recovery.
  • Manage virtual machines and supporting server infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot complex server, operating system, application, storage, and infrastructure issues.
  • Support server hardware and various RAID storage configurations.

Infrastructure Monitoring & Performance

  • Proactively monitor infrastructure health, availability, capacity, and performance.
  • Analyze system statistics and performance data to identify bottlenecks and emerging issues.
  • Lead troubleshooting and optimization activities to improve infrastructure performance and reliability.
  • Establish system baselines and support infrastructure monitoring practices.
  • Support Industrial Defender-based baselining where applicable.

Patch, Firmware & Lifecycle Management

  • Plan and perform operating system, hypervisor, firmware, and infrastructure-component patching.
  • Support lifecycle management across Nutanix, VMware, Windows, Linux, and related infrastructure.
  • Maintain platform stability and security while coordinating upgrades and maintenance activities.
  • Support dark-site patching of Nutanix AHV and related components in restricted or isolated environments.

Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity

  • Implement and maintain backup and recovery processes for systems, applications, and data.
  • Support disaster recovery planning, testing, documentation, and execution.
  • Perform system and application restoration activities when required.
  • Help ensure critical infrastructure meets enterprise availability and recoverability requirements.

Networking & Security

  • Troubleshoot infrastructure issues involving DHCP, DNS, routing, firewalls, and IP networking.
  • Apply fundamental security principles including ACLs, encryption, authentication, authorization, and system hardening.
  • Partner with networking and cybersecurity teams to resolve cross-platform issues.
  • Support infrastructure practices aligned with security and compliance requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of NERC CIP requirements within data center and critical infrastructure environments where applicable.

Scripting, Automation & Documentation

  • Develop and maintain automation using PowerShell, Bash, KSH, Perl, or comparable scripting technologies.
  • Automate repetitive infrastructure administration, monitoring, configuration, and operational activities.
  • Develop and modify scripts and queries as needed to support troubleshooting and operations.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation covering system architecture, configurations, procedures, migrations, troubleshooting, and system designs.
  • Recommend improvements that increase infrastructure reliability, efficiency, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • 5+ years of IT infrastructure/support experience.
  • Strong hands-on Nutanix administration and support experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing Nutanix clusters.
  • Experience with Nutanix cluster deployment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Nutanix hypervisor migration best practices.
  • In-depth experience migrating VMware vSphere workloads to Nutanix AHV.
  • Experience designing and implementing VMware vSphere and Nutanix environments.
  • Strong Windows Server and Linux administration experience.
  • Experience with Active Directory, domains, Group Policy, backup, and recovery.
  • Strong knowledge of server infrastructure, virtualization, storage, and RAID configurations.
  • Experience monitoring infrastructure health, capacity, availability, and performance.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex server, hypervisor, storage, networking, and operating-system issues.
  • Experience with disaster recovery, system backup, and restoration.
  • Experience with patch and firmware installation and lifecycle management.
  • Working knowledge of DHCP, DNS, routing, firewalls, and enterprise networking.
  • Scripting or automation experience with PowerShell, Bash, KSH, Perl, or similar technologies.
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, documentation, organization, and customer-service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing dark-site/offline patching of Nutanix AHV, Nutanix components, and other hypervisors.
  • Experience with Industrial Defender for system baselining or infrastructure security monitoring.
  • Knowledge of NERC CIP compliance and its impact on data center and infrastructure-management practices.
  • Advanced PowerShell or other infrastructure automation experience.
  • Ability to interpret, modify, and develop scripts and SQL queries.
  • Experience supporting highly available, operationally critical, or regulated infrastructure environments.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to provide after-hours and on-call support for critical infrastructure issues.
  • Willingness to work overtime and flexible hours for emergency response and scheduled maintenance.
  • Ability to travel to supported company locations when necessary.
  • Ability to lift and transport server and infrastructure equipment when required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a NERC CIP Personnel Risk Assessment background check.
  • Ability to provide two professional references from recent roles if requested during the selection process.
  • This position is 100% onsite, five days per week.

Preferred Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Nutanix infrastructure specialist with substantial experience designing and supporting both Nutanix and VMware environments. Most importantly, they have personally managed Nutanix clusters and understand the technical planning and execution required to migrate enterprise VMware vSphere workloads to Nutanix AHV.

This individual should be equally comfortable working across Nutanix, VMware, Windows, Linux, Active Directory, storage/RAID, networking, backup/recovery, patching, monitoring, and automation. Success requires strong technical ownership, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain reliable infrastructure in an operationally critical enterprise environment.
