This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Project Assistant for the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU).

Professor Kenneth Funk is completing a book, Technology and the Good Life, and seeks to hire a student editor to help prepare the manuscript for submission to Wipf and Stock Publishers by the end of 2026.

Position Duties

The student editor will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Thoroughly understand the publishers style guide.
  • Review draft chapters and other parts of the book for spelling, grammar, sentence structure, organization, and conformance to the style guide, and bring problems to the attention of the author.
  • In particular, check citations and bibliography entries for proper style.
  • At the authors direction, edit the manuscript to correct selected problems.
  • Report regularly to the author on progress, plans, and needs.
  • In general, supervise final preparation of the manuscript to see that it satisfies the publishers requirements for submission and assist the author and other members of his team to make it do so.
  • After submission, help the author and his team make additional changes required by the publisher.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered full-time by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

Applicants for this position must possess excellent English language skills, both written and oral, be proficient in Microsoft Word, and be familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style. Familiarity with LibreOffice or OpenOffice and experience as an editor are desirable.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position will require an average of from five to 15 hours per week at a starting pay rate of $16.00 per hour. Most of the work can be done remotely, on- or off-campus, but occasional in-person meetings will be needed.
