Summary

The Environmental Manager is highly responsible administrative work in planning, performing and coordinating management functions or serving in a responsible and specialized staff capacity in a county hospital. Employees of this class perform highly responsible administrative management work involving planning, programming, and controlling the operations of a large department or group of small departments, or the performance of specialized staff assignments of equivalent scope. The Environmental Manager assists the Administrator in achieving the most efficient result producing approach to handle all functions of the Environmental Services Department. Emphasis of the work is on application of mature judgment, a high degree of resourcefulness, advanced knowledge of management principles and hospital administration in identifying, analyzing and solving problems, recommending major changes in policy and in making decisions covering procedures, staffing and work flow. General supervision is exercised over subordinate area supervisors through review and evaluation of work programs and achievement of goals. General direction is received from an administrative or professional superior through assistance with more complex problems and policies and evaluation of total program results. This position will have a significant role in the administration or preparation of the departments or the organization''s budget.

Responsibilities

  • Recruits, motivates and maintains an effective staff to carry out assigned responsibilities.
  • Provides for the training and development of the staff and plans and coordinates educational program needs.
  • Assists in developing and enforcing departmental goals and objectives with target dates for completion.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with medical staff, nursing staff and adjunct support services.
  • Evaluates product for cost and acceptability.
  • Conducts regular rounds on all patient and non-patient areas.
  • Responds promptly to suggestions, complaints and compliments from all who receive service and ensures that all Environmental services personnel do the same.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Environmental Services, Grounds keeping, Waste Management, Pest Control and Housekeeping technology and recommends appropriate changes.
  • Directs the implementation of approved recommendations.
  • Compiles statistical reports that provide productivity measures and performance indicators; maintains statistics required by DERM and other regulatory agencies.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of all applicable biomedical waste rules, Chapter 64E-16, Conducts meetings with supervisory staff at least biweekly and reports to administrator issues that have an impact on their work and the department.
  • Submits weekly and monthly reports on the status and/or recommendations for correcting deficiencies in all patient/non-patient care areas.
  • Assists the administrator in preparing the budget.
  • Serves on various committees.
  • Coordinates activities with laundry contract companies.
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience. Management experience is required.

Education

High School diploma is required.

Skill

Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
