Summary:

The Malpractice Liability Specialist assists the Corporate Director of Professional Liability in multiple aspects of Penn's Professional Liability Program. This position actively enrolls patient care providers into Penn's self-insured medical malpractice program using specialized professional liability underwriting and claims software systems.

The Malpractice Liability Specialist is responsible for assuring timely reporting to the State of PA all Mcare eligible providers and entities. This position is accountable for maintaining and auditing the Mcare accounting assessment charges to include assuring all permissible discounts have been applied for.

The Malpractice Liability Specialist supports and assists users of professional liability software systems. The position maintains good and positive working relationships with department stakeholders and the Penn community at large.

The Office of Professional Liability is the process owner of various projects. The person in this position is expected to assist the Corporate Director of Professional Liability in the development and implementation of systems, processes, and standards in a coordinated and efficient manner.

Responsibilities:

• Routine processing of requests for medical malpractice enrollment, changes, and terminations according to department underwriting procedures.
• Fielding routine questions concerning professional liability coverage.
• Timely reporting of Mcare eligible providers and entities.
• Resolving Mcare noncompliance discrepancies.
• Verifying accuracy of the Mcare assessment charges and assuring inclusion of permissible discounts.
• Distribution of evidence of professional liability coverage.
• Review, process, and respond to both internal and external coverage verification requests.
• Provides assistance to Corporate Director of Professional Liability where needed to enable completion of budget projections for the Professional Liability Program.
• Provides accurate Professional Liability quotes.
• Processes approved payments for Penn's professional liability program.
• Maintain updated underwriting manuals to include software manual(s) outlining system functions and procedures.
• Effective communication with software vendors to identify, test, report and resolve system problems including customizations and updates.
• Coordinate scheduling of software training sessions and provide education to system users as needed.
• Coordinate workload and activities with the Medical Professional Liability Coordinator.
• Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
• Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Education or Equivalent Experience:

• Bachelor's degree is required.
• 5+ years of Risk Management; Financial Management experience is required.
• 5+ years of experience in a complex organization or Academic Health System; insurance company, or brokerage firm is required.
• Knowledge of Pennsylvania Professional Liability Insurance environment and regulations is preferred.
• Thorough understanding of malpractice classification and rating structures for physicians and hospitals. Understanding of MCARE rating, guidelines, and electronic filing requirements is preferred.
• Knowledge of insurance software database systems is preferred.
