Design Controls Engineer

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, control panel layouts, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Support control system architecture and hardware design from concept through fabrication and factory acceptance testing.
  • Participate in project kick-offs, design reviews, and customer meetings.
  • Coordinate with mechanical and electrical engineering teams to ensure designs meet technical and project requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and control system issues during build, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and field service teams to support equipment installation and start-up activities.
  • Manage project priorities, communicate progress, and identify potential risks.
  • Support the development and maintenance of engineering standards and best practices.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, and vendors as required.
  • Travel occasionally for customer and vendor visits (less than 10%).
  • Support quality, environmental, health, and safety initiatives.

The Successful Applicant

Ideal Candidate: Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline; alternatively, an associate degree with relevant controls engineering experience, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or automated machinery design.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, preferably AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Knowledge of industrial control panel design, component selection, and electrical safety standards.
  • Familiarity with UL508A and NFPA 79.
  • Experience working within a manufacturing, OEM, or capital equipment environment.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.

Preferred:

  • Experience with OEM machinery, converting equipment, or similar industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Understanding of industrial communication networks, particularly EtherNet/IP.
  • Exposure to PLC-based control systems, including Rockwell and Siemens platforms.
  • Familiarity with AC drive technologies such as Yaskawa or Allen-Bradley PowerFlex.
  • Experience working within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to work independently, manage shifting priorities, and develop practical technical solutions.
