    Provides direct supervision and technical leadership for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, repair and reliability of HVAC and mechanical systems throughout a complex healthcare campus. The HVAC / Mechanical Supervisor directs skilled trades staff, establishes daily work priorities, supports troubleshooting of critical systems, manages preventive and corrective maintenance, coordinates vendors and planned shutdowns, and ensures work is performed safely, accurately and in accordance with departmental procedures and healthcare regulatory requirements. This is a hands-on supervisory role requiring strong HVAC/mechanical technical knowledge, leadership, communication, documentation and emergency-response capability.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Staff Supervision & Daily Operations - Direct HVAC/mechanical staff; assign and prioritize daily work; conduct huddles; manage coverage and workload; coach staff; reinforce attendance, schedule, safety and department expectations; and support performance management and training.
    • HVAC / Mechanical Technical Oversight - Provide technical direction and troubleshooting for air-handling systems, chilled and hot water systems, steam, pumps, heat exchangers, refrigeration, VAVs, exhaust systems, hydronic distribution and related mechanical equipment.
    • Work Order & Preventive Maintenance Management - Review work queues; prioritize corrective and preventive maintenance; ensure accurate work-order documentation and closeout; monitor aging work; verify follow-up responsibility; and identify recurring equipment failures.
    • Regulatory, Safety & Healthcare Compliance - Support Joint Commission and applicable healthcare requirements, Infection Control, environmental conditions, pressure relationships, temperature/humidity requirements, LOTO and safe work practices. Maintain required maintenance and inspection documentation.
    • Projects, Contractors & Vendor Coordination - Coordinate contractors, shutdowns, renovations, equipment replacement and vendor service. Review field conditions, communicate operational impacts, verify work and support commissioning, turnover and return to service.
    • Building Automation & Energy Management - Monitor BAS alarms, trends, schedules and system performance. Coordinate controls troubleshooting and ensure changes support approved sequences of operation and reliable environmental control.
    • Emergency Response & Operational Reliability - Respond to mechanical failures, leaks, loss of heating/cooling, environmental excursions and other facility emergencies. Establish priorities, direct response activities and escalate operational risks appropriately.
    • Planning, Reporting & Continuous Improvement - Track department KPIs, manpower needs, equipment condition and recurring failures. Provide recommendations for repair, replacement, infrastructure renewal and capital planning.

    Qualifications

    High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a recognized HVAC/refrigeration apprenticeship, technical school program, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate degree or advanced technical education in HVAC, mechanical systems, facilities management or related field preferred.

    Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible commercial, institutional or industrial HVAC/mechanical experience, including demonstrated lead, supervisory or work-coordination responsibilities. 10+ years HVAC/mechanical experience with 3-5 years in a lead or supervisory role. Healthcare, pharmaceutical, university, central-plant or other critical-facility experience strongly preferred.

    Valid driver license as required for assigned duties. EPA Section 608 certification appropriate to work performed. Other trade licensing/certification as required by state law or assigned responsibilities. Connecticut HVAC trade license or equivalent applicable credential; OSHA-30; manufacturer or BAS/controls training preferred.
