JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Health and Safety Specialist works under the supervision of the UT Health Sciences Safety Officer to implement and manage health, safety, and environmental programs of the institution. Efforts have a direct impact on the health and safety of University employees, students, and visitors who occupy areas serviced by personnel and equipment. Efforts also help limit institutional liability by promoting regulatory compliance and reducing the potential for civil liability associated with injuries to students, staff, and visitors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's Degree in one of the Sciences OR a combination of related education and related work experience, preferably in one or more of the following areas: on-the-job adherence to safety practices and procedures, environmental health/safety, emergency management, business continuity management, hazardous materials response, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field to equal four (4) years. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures.

  • Customer service and conflict resolution skills necessary to promote compliance with institutional procedures.

  • Ability to evaluate site conditions for compliance with applicable regulations and institutional procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Familiar with OSHA and related Tennessee health, safety and environmental management laws.

  • Skilled and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

  • Mathematical skills including algebra.

  • Promote compliance with health and safety regulations through the identification and abatement of health and safety hazards.

  • Perform facility inspections preparation, collection and review of health and safety documentation such as chemical inventories, job hazard analyses, training records and facility inspections.

  • Evaluating engineering controls, PPE selection and use and assessment of worker exposure to hazardous agents (e.g. noise, heat, chemicals).

  • Investigate incidents and concerns through root-cause analysis.

  • Coordinate efforts of contractors including environmental consultants and hazardous waste vendors.

  • Provide follow-up as necessary to ensure the resolution of identified issues.

  • Prepare and provide health and safety training.

  • Respond to hazardous material emergencies (e.g. chemical spills, indoor air quality issues, etc.) and maintain campus emergency management plans and coordinate with the Local Emergency Planning Commission (LEPC) and municipal emergency responders.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Promote compliance with health and safety regulations through the identification and abatement of health and safety hazards.
