The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is a nonprofit in Boston, MA with a mission to restore and improve the Emerald Necklace for all. The Conservancy is dedicated to stewarding the 1,100-acre linear Emerald Necklace park system in Boston and Brookline connecting over 15 diverse neighborhoods. Our vision: A thriving Emerald Necklace where people and parks care for each other, made possible through thoughtful parks care, people-driven programming and inclusive policy work.
Position Overview
The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is seeking qualified applicants for a temporary position to lead, teach and inspire youth crew members ages 14-18 in our summer employment program. The Green Team is a unique and exciting program that employs youth and combines environmental career exploration, park and rose garden maintenance, hands-on workshops, soft skill development, environmental education, nature connection and outdoor adventure activities. Each Crew Leader is responsible for creating a rewarding, safe and productive experience for the 10-12 crew members ages 14 -18.

Position type: Seasonal, June 29, 2026 - August 13, 2026, Non-Exempt
Department: Education
Reports to: Education Manager
Compensation: $20-$25/hour, depending on experience
Work Schedule: 32-35 hours a week.
- Training dates: June 29-June 30, 10:00 am-2:00 pm
- Program facilitation days: Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am -4:30 pm
- Staff planning day: Fridays, 10:00 am –1:30 pm (if necessary)
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage and support a crew of 10-12Green Team youth crew members
- Supervise training on safe tooluse
- Oversee crew operations by managing the quality and technique of work performed, ensuring the successful and timely completion of work projects
- Promote leadership development within the team
- Lead team-building activities and energizer games
- Manage the physical and emotional well-being of crew
- Co-plan and facilitate an overnight camping trip
- Participate in outdoor adventure days and overnight camping trip
- Convey important logistical information (daily meeting times and locations) and manage crew timesheets
Qualifications
- 1+ year of experience as a camp counselor, Girl, or Boy Scout Leader, environmental education instructor/teacher, outdoor adventure facilitator, or related experience
- 1+ year of experience working with youth ages 14-18 in an outdoor environment
- 1+ year of experience and success in leading and/or teaching young people
- Driver's license in good standing; must be comfortable with driving a 12 and/or 15 passenger van
- Must possess valid First Aid and CPR Certification before the start of the program
- Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
- Demonstrate a positive attitude while working on a team
- Interest in natural history, nature connection, environmental education, and science education
- Interest in land care (plant bed maintenance, invasive plant removal)
- BA or BS in, environmental studies, biology earth science, or related experience preferred
- An offer of employment is contingent upon a successful background check, including a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information), and driving record check
Physical and Time Requirements
- Ability to perform manual, physical outdoor work which requires standing, bending, kneeling, pulling, lifting, etc. Outdoorwork includes, but is not limited to, pruning, weeding, hiking, mulching, etc.
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds
