    Job Description

(Kitchen Managers, Chefs, Seafood Supervisors & Food Production Leaders Welcome to Apply)

This role is internally titled Meat Production Supervisor.

Are you a Kitchen Manager, Sous Chef, seafood processing supervisor, or food production leader ready for a change of pace? North Star Quality Meats (NSQM) — the meat production facility supplying Alaska Commercial Company (AC) stores across rural Alaska — is looking for a hands-on leader to run daily operations in our Anchorage Meat Cutting Room and warehouse, serving as the critical link between the production floor and the Plant Manager.

We can teach the meat side to the right person. What we can’t teach is being someone your team trusts, works hard alongside, and leads by example on the floor every day. Whether your background is in a commercial kitchen, a seafood plant, a grocery meat or deli department, or food production/warehouse leadership — if that sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

Joining ACC gives you the opportunity for growth and development throughout the company, a competitive pay and benefits package, and the chance to be part of a dynamic and diverse culture.

ACC is a subsidiary of The North West Company International (NWCI), a leading retailer serving under-served rural communities and urban neighborhood markets across Northern Canada, Western Canada, rural Alaska, the South Pacific islands, and the Caribbean. Our stores offer a broad range of products and services with an emphasis on food. Check out www.alaskacommercial.com for more information.

    Your Responsibilities

    Food Safety & Compliance

    • Ensure full USDA and HACCP compliance; enforce food safety, sanitation, hygiene, and date control standards at all times
    • Oversee correct receiving procedures including inspection, dating, cleaning, temperature control, and storage of all products
    • Ensure product is priced and packaged to company standards, including correct Cryovac pouches and labels
    • Maintain warehouse floor, equipment, and work/stock areas to meet or exceed company standards for safety and cleanliness
    • Ensure all equipment is calibrated and in proper working order

    Production & Inventory

    • Lead and supervise daily meat processing and production operations in the Meat Cutting Room and warehouse
    • Manage the meat production schedule to maximize sales and profitability through effective pack selection, cut meats, and primals
    • Monitor and control inventory levels; rotate product, schedule production, and minimize over/under stocks to maximize in-stocks and drive sales
    • Protect company assets by controlling inventories and shrink; monitor gross profit and maintain required USDA records and 3-year databases

    Team Leadership

    • Train, coach, and develop meat plant staff on proper handling, preparation, and safety procedures
    • Provide leadership to the plant team and support to the Plant Manager; participate as a key member of the management team

    Customer Service

    • Deliver excellent customer service to stores and handle inquiries, special orders, and complaints effectively

    Skills and Qualifications

    • Proven ability to lead, train, and earn the trust of a hands-on production team — this is essential
    • Comfortable being on the floor and hands-on with the work, not just managing from the office
    • 2+ years supervising a team in a commercial kitchen, seafood processing facility, meat or deli department, food production, or warehouse/perishables environment
    • Meat cutting experience is a strong plus but not required — we will train the right candidate on knives, meat saws, and other meat department tools
    • Working knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, HACCP, USDA compliance, and food safety standards
    • Strong inventory management and production scheduling skills
    • Customer-driven mindset with a track record of delivering results
    • Computer proficiency in Excel and Outlook
    • Strong communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions
    • Analytical skills and ability to handle confidential business information

    Working Conditions

    • Cold/refrigerated and freezer environment — must be comfortable working in extreme temperature conditions
    • Frequent lifting of 50+ pounds
    • Extended periods of standing; requires full use of hands, arms, and body mechanics
    • Occasional extended hours as needed

    Location: Anchorage, AK
Reports to: Plant Manager | NSQM
This position is eligible for an annual bonus

We create a collaborative and constructive culture by:

    • Acting with Integrity • Fostering excellence • Respecting Others • Working Collaboratively • Being Accountable

The North West Company is committed to inclusion and diversity and encourages applications from all candidates including but not limited to: all religions and ethnicities, LGBTQ2s+, BIPOC, and persons with disabilities.

You may include your resume and cover letter together as a single document. About Company

Alaska Commercial Company is a retail company which provides groceries and general merchandise in stores throughout Alaska. We have a compelling and authentic story that few retailers in North America can compare with. We are proud of our long tradition of providing food and general merchandise to rural Alaskans. Our history is interwoven with the history of Alaska. During the past 140 years Alaska Commercial Company has earned a special reputation in rural Alaska. We are Alaska's trusted community store of choice, and the retail employer of choice in rural Alaska.

In 1776, Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, granted trading rights to the Russian American Trading Company and traded goods and services for furs, gold and other tradable goods at trading posts throughout Alaska. When the United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, the company was sold to San Francisco merchants Lewis Gerstle and Louis Sloss and was renamed the Alaska Commercial Company.

In 1992, the company was purchased by The North West Company (NWC) from then owner The Commercial Enterprise Development Corporation of Alaska. This acquisition by NWC made the combined companies the largest North American rural retailers and one of the largest employers in the State of Alaska.
