Facilities Associate

The Facilities Associate plays a vital hands-on role in maintaining The Sixth Floor Museum's physical spaces, ensuring they are clean, safe, functional, welcoming, and sustainable for visitors, staff, and collections. Reporting to the Head of Facilities and Assistant Head of Facilities, this position supports daily facility operations, preventive maintenance, safety protocols, and minor repairs. This role contributes to a positive visitor experience while helping advance the museum's goals of operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and accessibility in both in-person and hybrid programming environments.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs across museum galleries, public areas, administrative office areas, meeting spaces, restrooms, and outdoor spaces (including parking areas). Assist with the care and monitoring of building systems such as HVAC, lighting, plumbing, electrical, and climate control equipment to protect collections and ensure visitor comfort.
• Conduct daily walkthroughs and inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, or accessibility issues, reporting findings promptly.
• Help enforce safety policies and procedures to protect visitors, staff, and museum assets.
• Participate in regular safety inspections, including fire/life safety systems and associated training, emergency exits, first aid stations, and ADA accessibility features.
• Assist with incident reporting, accident investigations, and implementation of corrective actions.
• Support emergency preparedness by participating in drills (fire, evacuation, active threat) and helping maintain emergency supplies and equipment.
• Actively promote inclusive and accessible environments by maintaining clear pathways, accurate signage, and compliance with ADA standards.
• Assist with opening and closing procedures, event setup/teardown, and preparation of spaces for exhibitions, programs, and special events (including hybrid/digital needs).
• Support parking area maintenance, signage, and basic groundskeeping as needed.
• Use digital tools (work order systems, building management software, or mobile apps) to log tasks, report issues, and track completion.
• Work collaboratively with operations, security, and facilities teams to foster a positive and productive work environment and interface effectively across all departments.

Required Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree or technical certification in facilities maintenance, building systems, or a related field is preferred.

Experience: 1-3 years of hands-on experience in facilities maintenance, janitorial services, building operations, or general maintenance. Experience in a museum, cultural institution, hospitality, or public venue is highly desirable. Basic knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry is a plus.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and lift/carry up to 50 lbs regularly. Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigating stairs, galleries, and tight spaces. Ability to work at heights or in confined areas occasionally.

Preferred Certifications: OSHA 10-hour safety training, CPR/First Aid, or any facilities-related certifications. Willingness to obtain relevant certifications is encouraged

Compensation and Benefits:

This position is full-time and non-exempt. Compensation is commensurate with experience and aligned with internal compensation structure. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
