The Boring Company is revolutionizing urban transportation by building an underground network of tunnels to eliminate soul-crushing traffic.

As a field-based Mechanical Design Engineer, you will help keep Prufrock systems running, improving, and adapting to real-world operating conditions. This role blends hands-on field engineering with practical mechanical design work, from troubleshooting equipment issues to designing and implementing job-site solutions such as sensor brackets, access hardware, valve handles, guards, mounts, fixtures, and other components needed to support machine operation.

You will work directly on and around the machine to understand problems, take measurements, develop concepts, validate fit and function, and support fabrication, installation, and iteration in the field. The role requires strong mechanical design fundamentals, but the focus is on practical execution: identifying what is needed, designing solutions that can be built and installed quickly, and ensuring the machine continues to operate safely and reliably in demanding conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, modify, and implement practical mechanical solutions for machine operations, including brackets, mounts, guards, handles, fixtures, support equipment, vehicle interfaces, and tunnel infrastructure components.
  • Work directly on and around the machine to take measurements, validate fit and function, test components, and execute rapid field iteration from concept through installation.
  • Collaborate with project, operations, and engineering teams to validate system behavior, provide field feedback, and ensure design decisions support top-level operational needs and future developments.
  • Use sound engineering judgment, hand calculations, CAD, and FEA as appropriate to develop, communicate, and document designs, design changes, field issues, and implemented solutions.
  • Support commissioning, maintenance, and daily equipment operation while ensuring systems meet performance, reliability, safety, schedule, and regulatory requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience in design, build and testing.
  • Proficiency using SolidWorks.
  • Basic proficiency in machine design.
  • Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
  • Hands-on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing - can be in a professional, academic or recreational setting.
  • Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
