Role Overview
The Engineering Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for maximizing asset reliability, optimizing mechanical uptime, and executing capital deployment strategies. This position bridges tactical plant floor maintenance and hands-on team leadership with long-term engineering strategy, ensuring production lines operate at peak efficiency while championing a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance Operations & Asset Reliability
- Team Leadership: Direct, mentor, and develop multidisciplinary mechanical, electrical, and facility team members.
- Predictive Strategy: Shift from reactive firefighting to a proactive culture by owning preventive (PM) and predictive (PdM) maintenance schedules to drive down unplanned downtime.
- Root Cause Analysis: Lead Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to eliminate chronic equipment failures.
- Inventory & Vendor Management: Optimize spare parts inventory levels to balance working capital with equipment risk while managing key vendor and contractor relationships.
- Lifecycle Management: Oversee engineering and capital improvement projects ($CAPEX) from initial conceptual design and budgeting through to installation, testing, and start-up.
- System Upgrades: Design and implement automated system upgrades, equipment retrofits, and facility expansions to boost throughput.
- Energy & Utility Optimization: Evaluate and improve plant utility efficiencies, including compressed air, HVAC, water, and power distribution systems.
- CMMS Ownership: Serve as the super-user for the Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to track work orders, labor efficiency, and asset history.
- Budget Accountability: Develop and manage the annual maintenance operational budget ($OPEX), ensuring tight cost controls on parts, labor, and external contractors.
- Data-Driven KPIs: Track, analyze, and report on critical operational metrics including OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), and MTTR (Mean Time to Repair).
Qualifications & Key Skills
Education & Background
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline (Equivalent hands-on plant leadership experience will be considered).
- 5+ years of progressive engineering and maintenance experience within a heavy industrial, manufacturing, or processing plant environment.
- 2+ years in a direct supervisory or managerial capacity over technical teams.
Technical & Core Competencies
- Industrial Machinery: Deep technical knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, PLCs, robotics, and complex automated systems.
- Reliability Methodologies: Practical experience with Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Software Proficiency: Advanced skills in CMMS platforms (e.g., Maximo, SAP, eMaint) and CAD software for reviewing engineering schematics.
- Regulatory Compliance: Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, National Electrical Code (NEC), and local environmental/safety compliance standards.
