Overview:
Department 492 is responsible for developing future Fast Attack submarine concepts to increase submarine relevancy and escalate the US Navy’s global undersea dominance during a time of accelerating technological advancements.
Department 492 engineers work to advance submarine design and provide engineering support for the development, procurement, installation and test of complex mechanical systems including items such as hatches and doors, weapons/payload systems, ocean interfaces, hydraulic actuators, motors and gearboxes, linkages, and other future capability assessments.
Senior level engineers in Department 492 are responsible for developing build to print designs from the ground up, then independently resolving design problems and developing design improvements as necessary. Interfaces with the supply base and interaction with the shipyard is frequently required to resolve construction and material procurement problems. Program management skills are also desired for developing plan of actions and milestones (POAMs) for engineering tasks.
Senior level engineers mentor new engineers, provide technical oversight and fluently interface with engineers from all engineering disciplines, designers, shipbuilders, trades, suppliers, Navy Labs and NAVSEA customer personnel.
