Position Summary
The Engineer maintains all hotel equipment, systems and building components, including mechanical and electrical systems, pumps, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, locks, furniture, paint, wall coverings and tile, so guests stay in safe, comfortable rooms and the property runs without interruption.
Essential Duties
- Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment, guest rooms and public areas
- Complete daily work orders and all required maintenance paperwork
- Visually inspect and test machinery and equipment, and listen for unusual sounds to detect malfunctions early
- Dismantle defective equipment and install new or repaired parts
- Install and repair electrical wiring and electronic components, and install and replace lighting fixtures and bulbs
- Repair plumbing, locks, walls, tile and wall coverings, and paint corridors, guest rooms and lobby areas
- Fabricate and repair furniture and fixtures
- Coordinate guest room maintenance with housekeeping and front desk staff
- Provide guidance and direction to contractors and maintenance assistants
- Help deliver and set up new equipment such as televisions, mattresses, tables and chairs, and move heavy boxes and packages for repairs
- Clean ground level outside windows, the loading dock and the trash area, and pick up trash inside and outside the hotel
- Keep the maintenance room and storage areas clean, maintain inventory and secure hotel property
- Know and follow all safety and emergency procedures and accident prevention policies, and ensure guest safety at all times
- Respond to emergencies involving maintenance issues, including coming in when needed
- Respond to guest requests in a timely and personable manner
- Attend department meetings and scheduled training, complete tasks assigned by the General Manager, and keep sensitive information confidential
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required, or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Previous hotel engineer experience preferred, or comparable maintenance experience at a property such as an apartment complex or office building
- Painting, electrical, plumbing and general repair skills recommended
- Dependable schedule, professional communication, positive attitude and some computer knowledge
- Ability to read and write English, and to communicate with guests and employees with patience and tact
- Ability to work under pressure during busy periods and to complete tasks on a computer
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays
Physical Demands
Requires standing and walking about 95 percent of the workday, along with sitting, talking and hearing. Must regularly use hands to handle, feel and operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Expected to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb and crawl depending on the task, and to lift or move from 10 to 100 pounds depending on the materials and tools. Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Working Conditions
Work is throughout the property, indoors and outdoors. Must be available on weekends, holidays and varied shifts, and to respond to maintenance emergencies.
