About this Position:

The Electrician Specialist performs advanced electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on critical flood protection infrastructure, including Permanent Canal Closure and Pump (PCCP) Stations, floodgates, generators, motors, pumps, control systems, and related facilities. The position requires strong knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical equipment, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and safe work practices. Successful candidates should be dependable, safety-focused, technically skilled, and capable of working independently, particularly during emergency operations.

This position offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced electrical skills to mission-critical infrastructure that directly supports flood protection for communities in the Greater New Orleans area. The Electrician Specialist plays an essential role in maintaining operational readiness and may participate in emergency response during hurricanes, tropical storms, high-water events, and other flood-related emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:

Three years of experience or training in the electrical trade.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

The Electrician Specialist may perform advanced-level responsibilities in the field offices, warehouse, field facilities, Complex Marine Structures and Permanent Canal Closure Pump Stations for SLFPA-E. The Electrician Specialist reports directly to the Facility Assistant Maintenance Manager A and will typically participate in jobs that are performed on complex systems, at a highly responsible, advanced level, for the installation, maintenance, and repair of controls, low, medium and high voltage systems, motors and generators at any of the 3 PCCP sites.

  • Install, alter, maintain, and repair wiring systems for navigational gates, movable bridges, navigation traffic signals, record tidal gages, velocity meters, surveillance systems, marine radios, streetlights, electric taps, floodlights, and other electrical fixtures and equipment associated with buildings. Maintain electric motors and generators. Maintain emergency generators.
  • Perform electrical inspections of electrical equipment, controls, and appliances. Replaces electrical components on control systems; performs some mechanical work in replacing and repairing parts.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical motor starters, related switchgear, and controls. Ensure the operational ability of sector gates. Operate floodgates, generators, and bridges and inspect for operational deficiencies. Perform minor maintenance on all equipment assigned to their usage.
  • Operate small marine craft for carrying out maintenance and inspections. Operate various other types of electrical systems assigned to the Complex Structures Division. Participate in the electrical repairs to Flood Protection Authority-East buildings and equipment.
  • Operate flood gates, pumps, and motors for maintenance and during storm-related events. Participate in manpower at the Lake Borgne Barrier safe house or PCCP with others throughout a storm event. Requisition supplies and materials as needed. Project budget needed to accomplish repairs as needed.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This appointment type can be filled as Probational, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty or Job Appointment.

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

NOTE: The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East (SLFPA-E) is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the SLFPA-Es mission is to protect the residents of the east bank of Jefferson Parish, St. Bernard and the east bank of Orleans from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane/Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required and remain on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
