Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Director of Accounting to lead our financial operations. This role will oversee day-to-day accounting functions, ensure financial accuracy, and manage our property accounting portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in property management accounting, systems expertise, and leadership capabilities to support our continued organizational growth.

This position is onsite 5 days a week in Troy, MI. No remote option is currently offered, and candidates MUST have property accounting experience.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Permanent Director, Property Accounting to join our team in the Accounting + Finance industry. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead and manage our property accounting department. The successful candidate will oversee all accounting activities related to income auditing, budget management, financial analysis, and forecasting for our multifamily properties. This role requires a high level of financial competency, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the real estate industry, specifically multifamily apartments and units.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the property accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting for all properties in our portfolio.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures in line with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring timely completion and compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
  • Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
  • Work closely with property managers and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and recommendations.
  • Coordinate with the finance team on the preparation of budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of property-related accruals and prepayments.
  • Oversee the RUBS (Ratio Utility Billing System) process, ensuring accurate allocation of utility costs to residents.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and training to the property accounting team.
  • Continually assess and optimize accounting systems and processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master’s degree or CPA certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in property accounting, with a focus on multifamily properties.
  • Proven experience in managing a team and leading month-end and year-end close processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of RUBS and the ability to effectively manage utility cost allocation.
  • Strong knowledge of accrual accounting and financial statement preparation.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a strong focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • In-depth understanding of the real estate industry, specifically multifamily apartments and units.
