Our client, a global life sciences organization, is hiring a Director of Legal Operations to lead legal department operations for North America. This role manages legal technology, confidentiality processes, budgeting, and outside counsel coordination, while advancing process improvements that strengthen efficiency and governance across a fast-paced, collaborative legal team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead legal technology initiatives, including matter management, legal hold solutions, internal legal applications, AI-enabled tools, and e-signature workflows.
  • Oversee NDA and confidentiality processes and ensure end-to-end execution with appropriate controls.
  • Manage internal budgeting and forecasting for the legal department, including spend monitoring, resource evaluation, and budget tracking against operational plans.
  • Coordinate outside counsel management: engagement, legal fee budgeting, forecasting, analysis, and reporting.
  • Serve as a liaison to Finance regarding internal and external legal-related charges.
  • Coordinate CDA processes and corporate governance matters for all North American entities.
  • Support General Counsel and attorneys on special projects, including sensitive matters such as M&A, and on legal department operational initiatives.
  • Lead staffing activities including onboarding, new hire orientation, and operational readiness of legal hires.
  • Manage contract database administration and ensure accurate recording of executed contracts.
  • Maintain the legal intranet and associated templates/electronic resources to support internal knowledge access.
  • Supervise and develop a small paralegal team (approximately two paralegals) to ensure flawless operational delivery.
  • Hybrid work model with on-site requirements Monday and Wednesday.

Requirements

  • 10–15 years of experience in an in-house legal environment, with demonstrated budgeting and spend management experience.
  • Proven experience implementing and managing legal operations systems and technology; strong working knowledge of AI in legal workflows.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to independently manage priorities while collaborating across legal, Finance, and business partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with outside counsel and internal stakeholders.
  • High discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive legal and business information.
  • Advanced proficiency with Office tools and legal operations software; willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Professional ethics and integrity, with a track record of practical problem-solving.
  • BA/BS degree (or equivalent experience).
  • No litigation experience is required.
