Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Director of Gift Administration and Donor Compliance provides strategic leadership and oversight for the University's gift administration, donor compliance, and endowed fund management functions. This position ensures that charitable gifts and endowments are administered in accordance with donor intent, applicable federal and state laws, University policies, and industry best practices while minimizing institutional risk.

The Director leads the review, negotiation, execution, and ongoing administration of complex gift agreements, naming opportunities, and endowed funds, serving as the University's subject matter expert on charitable gift compliance and stewardship. The position partners closely with development officers, academic and administrative leaders, University Counsel, affiliated foundations, and external stakeholders to ensure gifts are structured, documented, and managed effectively to support institutional priorities.

This role also oversees the University's Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund Program, directs donor and fund compliance initiatives, and develops strategies to strengthen accountability, transparency, and stewardship of philanthropic resources across the institution. Through consultation, training, policy development, and compliance reviews, the Director promotes adherence to donor intent and regulatory requirements while advancing best practices in gift administration.

In addition, the Director provides leadership and supervision to professional staff, fostering a high-performing, customer-focused team culture, supporting employee development, and collaborating with University Development Office leadership to advance organizational goals and operational excellence.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum of a bachelor's degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with related experience. For positions with responsibility for direct solicitation of gifts and funds, a minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience working in a large, complex organization, preferably in nonprofit, compliance, or administrative environments, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across departments.
  • Strong technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel, combined with excellent analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain policies, address complex issues, and present effective solutions to diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated, with strong planning, time management, and project execution skills that ensure timely and accurate completion of work.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, charitable giving practices, IRS regulations related to philanthropy, and CASE guidelines preferred.
  • Experience with fundraising Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and a strong understanding of relational database functionality preferred.
  • Proficiency with enterprise resource planning systems, including strong working knowledge of PeopleSoft preferred.
