Position Overview
We are seeking a Development Test Engineer to support the development, testing, and optimization of gasoline engine emissions and aftertreatment systems for current and future powertrain applications. This role will focus on evaluating engine and emissions system performance, developing calibration strategies, integrating new hardware and sensors, and ensuring compliance with evolving global emissions regulations such as Tier 4, California LEV IV, Euro 7, and China 7.
The engineer will work across engine, powertrain, controls, calibration, emissions, regulatory, and supplier teams. Testing will involve engine/powertrain dynamometers, vehicle chassis dynamometers, and simulation/modeling tools to develop physics-based solutions and validate system performance.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, schedule, and lead day-to-day engine, powertrain dynamometer, and vehicle testing, coordinating with technicians and supporting engineering teams.
Develop and execute test plans, analyze results, and deliver technical findings to support project objectives.
Apply project management practices for planning, scheduling, tracking, and reporting, using tools such as MS Project and Excel.
Develop and optimize emissions and aftertreatment system solutions for high-efficiency gasoline and electrified powertrains.
Perform engine and emissions system calibration adjustments to support new emissions hardware and system configurations.
Evaluate competitor vehicles and emissions systems using instrumentation, diagnostics, and OBD data to understand system performance and control strategies.
Lead and coordinate multiple technology development projects with internal engineering teams and external suppliers.
Investigate complex powertrain system issues and develop solutions addressing performance, emissions, diagnostics, NVH, quality, fuel economy, and drivability.
Conduct testing, data analysis, modeling, and simulation to make physics-based engineering decisions and validate proof-of-concept solutions.
Support the integration of advanced emissions technologies, including catalysts, gasoline particulate filters (GPF), sensors, and other emissions-system components.
Define and communicate functional requirements at both the emissions-system and component levels to powertrain engineering and management teams.
Collaborate with global teams across engine, controls, calibration, regulatory, emissions, and supplier organizations.
Prepare and present technical reports, findings, recommendations, and project status updates to engineering leadership.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in automotive, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
2+ years of engineering experience with systems-level development involving hardware, controls, calibration, or powertrain systems.
Experience with port fuel injection and direct-injection spark-ignition engines, including ICE and hybrid applications.
Strong knowledge of powertrain systems, OBD, emissions systems, and virtual analysis/modeling and simulation.
Experience with tools such as GT-Power, AVL BOOST, AxiSuite, or similar engine simulation platforms.
Hands-on experience running and analyzing global emissions test cycles in various test-cell environments.
Experience with powertrain data acquisition and calibration tools such as INCA, CAS, AVL Concerto, TCKs, INTECRIO, or similar systems.
Working knowledge of engine combustion, engine hardware, thermal systems, transmissions, OBD, and electrified propulsion systems.
Understanding of the trade-offs between emissions, OBD, fuel economy, cost, drivability, and NVH.
Ability to identify root causes and optimize engine/emissions calibrations to improve system performance.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively both independently and within cross-functional engineering teams.
Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
Ability to organize, analyze, post-process, and present complex technical data and findings to engineering teams and senior management
