Controller
Location: Hybrid — 3 days in Washington, DC office
A well-established nonprofit organization is seeking a Controller to lead the day-to-day operations of its Finance department. Reporting to the CFO, this role will oversee a small team and partner with executive leadership and department heads on financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily accounting and finance operations while ensuring compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations.
- Oversee and develop a small finance team.
- Manage financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and month-end close activities.
- Partner with the CFO and senior leadership on financial analysis and organizational planning.
- Evaluate and improve finance processes, systems, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to increase efficiency, eliminate backlogs, and improve service to internal stakeholders.
- Leverage financial technology and refine procedures to strengthen the department's effectiveness.
- Collaborate with department leaders and executive-level stakeholders on budgets and financial reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including management experience.
- Experience leading or supervising a finance/accounting team.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with Sage Intacct strongly preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Experience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization is a plus.
- CPA is not required, but is a plus.
