At NOW CFO, we’re looking for a hands-on Controller to join our Bay Area consulting team and step into meaningful, high impact client work from day one.

This role is ideal for Controllers who enjoy variety, autonomy, and solving real business challenges. You’ll partner with leadership teams across multiple organizations to strengthen accounting operations, improve financial visibility, and build scalable processes that support long term growth. We are especially interested in professionals with experience in both manufacturing and nonprofit organizations, where strong controls, operational insight, and financial stewardship are essential. As a Controller Consultant, you’ll act as both a strategic advisor and a hands-on accounting leader, stepping into different environments and making an immediate impact through process improvements, reporting, audit support, and financial leadership.

This is a full-time consulting role with a hybrid schedule and competitive compensation of $150,000–$180,000, depending on experience. You’ll support clients throughout the Bay Area and must be willing to commute between San Jose and Downtown San Francisco as needed based on client preferences and engagement requirements.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Step into Controller level leadership roles for client organizations
  • Own and oversee day to day accounting operations, including close, reporting, and compliance
  • Strengthen internal controls, improve audit readiness, and streamline financial processes
  • Manage and support core accounting functions such as A/R, A/P, GL, payroll, inventory, grant tracking, fund accounting, cost accounting, and revenue recognition
  • Lead accurate and timely month end and year end close processes
  • Evaluate financial health and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting accuracy, and scalability
  • Partner with executives, boards, and operational leaders to provide actionable financial insight
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial planning initiatives
  • Serve as a key point of contact for auditors, external partners, and stakeholders

What Makes Someone Successful Here

  • Strong Controller or senior accounting leadership experience
  • Experience supporting both manufacturing and nonprofit organizations strongly preferred
  • Understanding of inventory, cost accounting, operational finance, grant reporting, and fund accounting concepts
  • Ability to step into new environments quickly and build credibility with leadership teams
  • Deep understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Hands-on mindset with the ability to operate strategically while also diving into day to day accounting work
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial information into meaningful business insight
  • CPA is a plus, but not required
  • Public accounting experience is helpful, but not mandatory
