Job Summary:

The Division of Neonatology has an immediate opening for a Clinical Research Nurse, in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine.

Coordinate and manage day-to-day clinical research activities in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in accordance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and applicable regulations. Screen, recruit, enroll, and obtain informed consent from study participants and families. Conduct study procedures, collect and maintain research data, monitor participant safety, and report adverse events. Maintain study documentation and compliance records, coordinate research visits and follow-up activities, and collaborate with investigators, clinical staff, and external partners to support successful study execution. Serve as a liaison between research teams, clinical departments, sponsors, and regulatory entities under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). Requires current Registered Nurse (R.N.) licensure.

This position is posted at multiple job levels. Each level has distinct qualifications, responsibilities, which will be evaluated during the selection process. Final placement, including the associated pay rate, will be determined based on business needs and budget considerations.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Coordinate day-to-day clinical trial activities in adherence to Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), study protocols, and applicable regulations. Implement processes and organize efforts within study team to achieve objectives, coordinating research procedures, study visits, and follow-up care. Create and maintain tools and documentation to track study metrics, providing updates to management. Conduct pre-study, site qualification, study initiation, monitoring visits, and close-out activities. Maintain source documents and report adverse events. Recruit, screen, enroll, and obtain consent from study participants. Collect and maintain patient and laboratory data. Work directly with study participants and families and serve as project liaison to other departments, outside organizations, and government agencies. Work under the direction of the Primary Investigator (PI). Requires a Registered Nurse (R.N.) certification.

  1. Independently manage 3-5 study protocols implemented in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Screen for eligible infants each workday.
  • Collaborate with the PI and NICU clinical staff to verify eligibility and approach of the family.
  • Obtain parental permission for infant's participation in the study.
  • Create and maintain screening and enrollment logs.
  • Perform study procedures per the protocol such as randomization, medication or lab orders, lab processing, or parental surveys.
  • Efficiently collect data and accurately enter it into the protocol database.
  • Monitor infant for adverse events and report events to the PI.
  • Ensure compliance with study protocol.
  • Review all protocol amendments, consent changes, and data form changes and ensure that these are implemented within the NICU processes.
  • Ensure proper storage, dispensing, handling, and disposition of investigational products and other supplies.
  • Communicate any issues with compliance to the study protocol with PI/nurse manager.
  • lCoordinate study start-up, site qualification, study initiation, monitoring visits, and study close-out activities.
  1. Provide back-up for all ongoing NICU studies.
  • Stay up to date on all other ongoing protocols.
  • Review eligibility and approach families for all ongoing NICU studies while on-site.
  • Conduct necessary protocol study procedures for all ongoing NICU studies.
  1. Actively collaborate with the NICU clinical staff.
  • Provide bedside teaching as needed.
  • Work proactively with the clinical care team to integrate the protocol with routine daily care of the infant.
  • Keep attending neonatologist and nurse practitioners updated on the study protocol and infant's participation in the study.
  1. Actively collaborate with other departments as needed.
  • Communicate recruitment plans with OB/GYN when approaching same families for multiple studies
  • If recruiting for studies with well-baby nursery, liaise with nursing management and staff regarding study protocol.
