    • Work closely with scientists, LIMS Supervisor and laboratory leadership.

    Job Description

    Do you have a background in laboratory sciences? Do you have experience with data systems? We are looking for a Business Analyst to help communicate and implement enhancements to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This system houses all the configuration, rules, tests and test data needed to generate laboratory results for the Infectious Disease (including Bioterrorism Response Laboratory, Chemical Threats Response Laboratory, and Next Generation Sequencing Laboratory), Toxicology, and Environmental Chemistry sections.

    This role works closely with the Section Chief Scientist, LIMS Supervisor, and laboratory personnel involved with specimen testing. You will coordinate necessary system changes to deliver results. To be successful in this role, you should be detail-oriented, able to explain technical concepts to non-technical users, and capable of delivering required results to laboratory teams.

    Principal Duties

    As a Business Analyst/Developer, you will be assigned a laboratory section and will:

    • Support new LIMS (LabWare v8) and API integration.
    • Provide HL7 integration architecture, development, enhancement, testing, and support.
    • Maintain working knowledge of LIMS, specifically LabWare v8.
    • Work with other LIMS analysts to support communication with laboratory leadership on LIMS priorities, data security, and informatics needs.
    • Program and troubleshoot system functionality and make recommendations on solutions in a timely manner.
    • Identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance relative to system goals.
    • Consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate solution.

    The Ideal Candidate Has

    • Experience programming, implementing, and maintaining complex software systems.
    • The ability to determine user needs and convert them into business and technical requirements.
    • The ability to evaluate and test software functionality to meet business needs.
    • The capacity to simultaneously manage multiple projects or tasks.
    • Experience teaching end users how to use complex software systems.
    • Knowledge of flow diagram software and the ability to create workflows.
    • Capability to organize and write documentation that clearly outlines objectives.
    • The ability to translate complex concepts for testing personnel and leadership.
    • The ability to solve complex technical challenges and deliver effective solutions.
    • Experience working with large databases and data retrieval.
    • An understanding of general laboratory processes, terminology, quality, and regulatory requirements.

    Preferred Experience

    • Employment experience and knowledge of laboratory methodology and processes in the assigned laboratory section.
    • Environmental Chemistry knowledge including sample preparation batch vs. analysis batch, detection limits vs. reporting limits, standards vs. reagents, instrument blank vs. reagent blank vs. field blank, and TNI/EPA reporting regulations.
    • Infectious Disease knowledge including Chain of Custody, reagent batches vs. cultures, algorithm-based reportable results, reflex rule development, and CLIA/FDA/CDC reporting elements.
    • Experience working with and supporting Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) dedicated to managing sample testing in Infectious Disease, Toxicology, and Environmental Chemistry laboratories.
    • Experience performing queries in LabWare LIMS, modifying minor coding issues, and customizing Crystal Reports.

    Typical Qualifications

    • Organizational aptitude.
    • Knowledge of standard healthcare data formats including HL7, XML, CCDA, LOINC, SNOMED CT, and ICD-10.
    • Experience with complex, modern information technology software.
    • Epidemiological, Information Technology, or Informatics experience.
    • A degree in Epidemiology, Laboratory Science, Computer Science, or Informatics.
    • Experience evaluating processes, gathering requirements, and translating them into technical specifications.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
    • Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workload across multiple complex projects.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Lucid for documentation and reporting.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Strong time management and organizational skills.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Support LabWare LIMS v8 and API integrations.
    • Provide HL7 integration support.
    • Gather and document requirements.
    • Create user stories and test scripts.
    • Perform User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
    • Develop workflow documentation.
    • Train end users.
    • Support system performance improvements.

    Required Qualifications

    • Business analysis experience.
    • SQL and relational database experience.
    • Requirements gathering and documentation experience.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • LabWare LIMS experience.
    • Laboratory Informatics background.
    • Knowledge of HL7, XML, CCDA, LOINC, SNOMED CT, and ICD-10.
    • Experience in a Public Health Laboratory environment.
    • Crystal Reports experience.
