Role of a Benefits Specialist
A Benefits Specialist is responsible for managing and administering an organization’s employee benefits programs. They act as a liaison between the company, employees, and benefits vendors, ensuring employees understand their benefits options and that the organization complies with legal and regulatory requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Benefits Administration
Manage day-to-day operations of employee benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, retirement plans, life insurance, be able to answer simple leave related questions
Assist in coordinating annual open enrollment processes, including employee communication, system updates, and vendor collaboration.
Process enrollments, changes, and terminations in benefit plans accurately and on time.
Monitor benefits eligibility, ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.
2. Employee Communication and Support
Educate employees about their benefits options and assist them in making informed decisions.
Address employee inquiries regarding claims, coverage, and eligibility.
Conduct benefit presentations during new hire indoc and answer benefit related questions.
3. Vendor and Stakeholder Coordination
Serve as the primary point of contact for benefits vendors, resolving issues related to coverage, claims, and file feeds.
Work closely with, payroll, to ensure accurate processing of benefits on paychecks
4. Compliance and Reporting
Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, such as COBRA, HIPAA, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Audit benefits enrollment data to ensure accuracy and compliance with company policies.
Skills and Qualifications
Experience administering employee benefit plans.
Strong knowledge of benefits administration systems and tools (e.g., UKG)
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with employees and vendors.
Analytical skills for managing data, resolving discrepancies, and evaluating program performance.
Familiarity with relevant laws and regulations.
Organizational skills to manage deadlines, especially during open enrollment and other peak periods.
