Battery Cell Engineer
About DENS
DENS develops and delivers advanced mobile energy and battery solutions for demanding sectors - from construction and ports to critical infrastructure and inland shipping. We are a fast-growing company of around 170 people, founded as a TU/e spin-off and based in Helmond, the Netherlands. Mechanics, electronics, chemistry and software are all under one roof: the cell you characterise ends up in a system in the field a few months later.
The role
The battery cell determines what our systems can do: how long they last, how much they deliver and how they hold up after thousands of cycles. You are the one who finds that out. You set the research direction, write the test plans, read the measurement data and build models that predict how a cell behaves over the years. R&D and the system teams use that knowledge to improve and further optimise the modules we already have. From measurement series to a better cell in the product.
What will you do?
- Setting research direction and test plans - You decide where we focus our research and capture it in test plans: capacity, lifetime, performance under load and behaviour in cold and heat.
- Analysing and interpreting data - Raw measurement series say little on their own; you extract what is really happening inside the cell and use it to back up our decisions.
- Modelling and simulation - You translate measured behaviour into models, so we can predict performance and ageing instead of testing every question.
- Evaluating new cell technogoly - New cell technology keeps coming to market. You assess what is genuinely suitable for our applications.
- Turning results into improvements - A test report is only finished once something is done with it: you translate outcomes into improvements and optimisations of the modules we already use.
- Working with R&D and system teams - You share your findings with engineering, BMS software and production, and liaise with cell suppliers on specifications.
Who are you?
- A university degree in electrochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or physics
- At least three years of experience as a battery or cell engineer, in R&D or a comparable technical research role - more experience is welcome
- Hands-on experience characterising cells and setting up test programmes - capacity, cycle life, performance and behaviour under varying conditions
- At home analysing and interpreting battery data
- You write your own analyses in Python or similar
- Experience with experimental research, validation and R&D projects
- You know how to make research land: from test result to visible product improvement
- You are analytical, structured in you approach and result-driven
- You are scientifically curious: knowing that something happens is not enough, you want to know why
- Good written and spoken Dutch and English
What we offer?
- Competitive salary based on experience
- Engineering, software and production under one roof - you see your work come back in the product
- Own test floor and R&D lab a short walk away
- Opportunities to grow within the company
Why DENS?
At DENS we build clean energy solutions for the future. Your research does not disappear into a repost here: what you measure and conclude comes back in the modules we build. Short lines, quick decisions and measurement date from systems that are actually running.
