Job Overview:
The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking an attorney to serve as a Contractor Associate General Counsel to assist the Department s effort to strengthen Tennessee s rural healthcare infrastructure by supporting the effective regulation of healthcare professionals serving residents throughout the state s 89 rural counties. This position reports to a Deputy General Counsel. The primary role of this position is the handling of disciplinary cases against healthcare licensees practicing in rural Tennessee counties, which includes working with Department investigators and licensing board consultants during the investigative and review process, negotiating resolution with licensees who have violated their respective practice acts, and trying cases before licensing boards. As assigned, job responsibilities may also include advising on special projects and conducting bill analysis related to the delivery of rural healthcare in Tennessee. Position requires weekly in-office time. This is a contract position not eligible for state employee benefits, and the successful candidate should obtain their own professional liability insurance.
Key Responsibilities:
-- Represent the department in administrative law cases before various health-related boards.
-- Review complaints and investigations involving healthcare licensees practicing in any of Tennessee s 89 rural counties.
-- Provide legal support for department investigators and licensing board consultants.
-- For those cases for which formal discipline is warranted, handle all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and trials.
-- Ability to competently manage a robust case load at various phases of litigation.
-- Assist with legislative projects as assigned, including bill analysis.
Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have litigation experience that includes trials, the ability to manage and prioritize a large volume of work, excellent verbal and written communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to collaborate and work in a team environment.
Education:
JD, admitted to TN Bar with a license in good standing required. At least 1 year of relevant legal experience preferred.
