    Description

    As an assistant director of fitness and wellness, you will oversee operations at SCADfit and ClubSCAD, the university’s fitness centers, to ensure exceptional service, safety, and a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff. A key member of the SCAD University Recreation (SCAD REC) team, you’ll lead, plan, implement, and assess wellness initiatives in Atlanta.

    To support SCAD REC, you will:

    • Assume responsibility for ClubSCAD and SCADfit in the absence of the department director; promote inclusion, trust, accountability, and professional excellence among student and professional staff; and serve as a mentor and role model for student employees, hourly staff, and wellness personnel
    • Establish performance expectations; support employees’ professional growth; and foster leadership development
    • Supervise and monitor participant activities across all fitness and wellness spaces to ensure a safe, welcoming environment; conduct fitness assessments and develop exercise prescriptions; and design individualized fitness programs for a diverse population
    • Provide one-on-one fitness consultations, personal training, wellness coaching, and motivational support to help individuals achieve their wellness goals
    • Assist with the design, implementation, and evaluation of wellness initiatives, incentive programs, health promotion campaigns, and campus-wide wellness events

    As an assistant director, you’ll:

    • Plan, coordinate, and instruct assigned group fitness and wellness classes
    • Collaborate with staff to support and lead recreational sports, intramural activities, wellness programs, special events, and departmental initiatives
    • Develop and maintain collaborative, supportive, and professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, campus partners, and external stakeholders
    • Support colleagues and foster a positive work environment through professionalism, diplomacy, teamwork, and effective communication
    • Develop and implement assessment tools to evaluate program effectiveness, space utilization, participant satisfaction, learning outcomes, and overall service quality

    Additionally, you’ll:

    • Maintain accurate records, including participation data, assessments, and reports, to support departmental planning and improvement efforts
    • Participate in professional development through departmental training, university programs, conferences, workshops, and industry certifications
    • Assist with building inspections, equipment maintenance oversight, and recommendations for equipment replacement, upgrades, and enhancements at ClubSCAD and SCADfit
    • Assist with SCAD Days, Welcome Week activities, admission events, and other premier university programs and special events
    • Support the overall operational, programming, staffing, and administrative needs of SCAD REC

    The ideal candidate is:

    • Knowledgeable about training programs and plans
    • Comfortable training students, faculty, and staff
    • Able to instruct and assist individuals and groups in the proper use of cardiovascular and strength-training equipment

    Candidates should ideally demonstrate:

    • Active engagement with and support for the SCAD mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities
    • An ability to apply basic knowledge of SCADfit policies, processes, or equipment relevant to fitness and recreation solutions

    Minimum qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or at least one year of fitness industry experience
    • At least six months of operations experience in a fitness center
    • Experience leading group exercise classes
    • At least one year of supervisory experience

    Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

    • Personal training certification from NSCA, NASM, ISSA, ACE, or another nationally accredited organization
    • Valid driver's license
    • Access to a car

    Travel required:   

    • Less than 10% 

     Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
