Position Overview

Join the Cumberland County Board of Elections team as an Administrative Professional and play a vital role in supporting fair, accurate, and efficient elections for our community. This position provides administrative support for election operations, including maintaining records, coordinating poll worker recruitment and training, assisting with payroll documentation, and supporting voter data management. Examples of Duties

  • Coordinate the assignment of poll workers for each election cycle, ensuring adequate staffing levels based on precinct size and operational needs

  • Recruit, maintain, and support a roster of Chief Judges, Judges, and Election Assistants to ensure successful election operations

  • Schedule poll workers for training classes and election assignments while accommodating availability and staffing requirements

  • Maintain ongoing communication with poll workers, elected officials, political organizations, and members of the public through phone, email, and written correspondence

  • Assist with absentee ballot processing, including preparation of mailings, voter data entry, record auditing, and quality assurance activities

  • Review election materials for accuracy, including verifying the spelling, formatting, and placement of candidate names on ballots

  • Coordinate the staging, preparation, and distribution of Election Day supplies for precinct officials and polling locations

  • Assist with staffing and scheduling for One-Stop Early Voting sites and arrange coverage for vacancies or unexpected staffing needs

  • Develop, update, and maintain training manuals, instructional materials, and related resources for election officials and poll workers

  • Prepare payroll documentation for office staff and poll workers, assign positions and pay rates, and resolve discrepancies related to election supplies and staffing records

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree in business administration or related area and two (2) years of experience in office administration or the assigned area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and administrative support functions

  • Knowledge of office software applications and technology utilized in a professional administrative environment

  • Knowledge of payroll procedures and processes within county government operations

  • Knowledge of County personnel policies, procedures, and applicable employment regulations

  • Knowledge of administrative policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to departmental operations and support services

  • Knowledge of election laws, regulations, and their application to various situations and circumstances

  • Skill in training, mentoring, and providing guidance to staff and election officials

  • Skill in analyzing processes, procedures, and policies and developing recommendations for improvement

  • Ability to provide leadership, establish work priorities, and effectively organize and coordinate multiple duties and assignments

  • Ability to gather, interpret, and communicate information regarding departmental programs, policies, and services

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, elected officials, and the public

  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment when interacting with diverse groups and handling sensitive matters

  • Ability to formulate recommendations and make decisions in complex or precedent-setting situations

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, public officials, poll workers, and members of the public

  • Ability to read maps, interpret precinct boundaries, and apply geographic information to election-related activities

In accordance with Session Law 2025-16, candidates selected for positions involving work with children in any capacity will be required to undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. If your drivers license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC drivers license within 60 days of hire.
