Description
Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring an Adjunct Instructor, Barbering in the Business & Entrepreneurship, Barbering Program. This role delivers engaging theoretical and hands-on barbering instruction aligned with state licensing standards. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching curriculum in in-person and distance formats, demonstrating proper techniques, maintaining attendance and student records, evaluating student performance, enforcing classroom and academic policies, and communicating student progress and concerns to program leadership while representing the college professionally.
Examples of Duties
- Organizes program of practical and technical instruction for distance learning and in-person learning, including demonstrations of skills required in barbering, and lectures on theory, techniques, and terminology; prepares outline of instructional programs and studies and assembles materials to be presented.
- Instructs students in subject areas, i.e., use, maintenance, and the safe operation of tools and equipment.
- Instructs students in the significance of accuracy, sanitation, efficiency, resourcefulness and good work habits if obtaining employment or entrepreneurship as licensed barber.
- Assigns lesson to students and corrects homework; administers tests to evaluate achievement of students in technical knowledge and practical skills; records results.
- Keeps records of daily attendance and student progress.
- Presents subject matter to students, utilizing a variety of methods and techniques, such as lectures, discussions, or demonstrations; ensures use of classroom time is organized and that instruction and clean-up can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Enforces classroom protocols, rules and regulations; maintains classroom discipline; utilizes effective classroom management techniques.
- Assists students to develop and implement effective study skills, practices and provide quality instruction at all times to students, teaching classes for the entire class period and properly covering the curriculum.
- Provide input to the Coordinator and/or Director regarding student outcomes;
- Enforce academic policy and procedures at all times;
- Report to the Coordinator and/or Director any issues, concerns, or problems as it relates to the curriculum, instruction or student conduct/behavior.
- Represent the college in a positive and professional manner at all times.
- Completes all mandatory training required by the college and participates in ongoing professional development activities to ensure effective performance, institutional compliance, and continuous improvement in assigned responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current North Carolina Barber Instructor License
- Current North Carolina Barber License
Work Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching adult learners the skills of barbering
- Preferably post-secondary teaching experience in a community college environment.
- Minimum of two years continuous experience working in a barber shop environment as a barber
Supplemental Information
- Ability to teach and demonstrate barbering theoretical and practical skills
- Working knowledge of instructional theory, basic education principles, practices and methodologies, the developmental process, competency-based curricula, and general classroom and lab practices.

Normal Working Hours:
This position may be required to work a maximum of a 16-hour work week as determined with the director to allow the employee to fulfill the assigned duties and responsibilities, including occasional evenings and weekends.
