Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Insurance Verification Specialist for a fully remote contract opportunity supporting healthcare insurance eligibility, benefits verification, and authorization processes across multiple states.

This high-volume position requires an individual who can independently obtain, review, and interpret comprehensive insurance benefits to support accurate patient admissions, authorizations, utilization, and billing decisions.

The ideal candidate has at least two years of hands-on healthcare insurance verification experience, strong knowledge of Medicare and commercial insurance plans, and the ability to manage approximately 100 patient-related tasks daily.

Key Responsibilities

• 
  Complete approximately 60–75 new patient insurance benefit verifications daily, along with 25–30 follow-up items or coordinator notes.
  
• 
  Independently investigate and interpret comprehensive insurance benefits, including eligibility, effective dates, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, copays, coinsurance, coverage limitations, and exclusions.
  
• 
  Verify authorization requirements, visit utilization, and home health or hospice coverage.
  
• 
  Utilize insurance clearinghouses, payer portals, and government systems to obtain accurate eligibility and benefits information.
  
• 
  Contact insurance carriers to clarify complex, incomplete, or conflicting coverage information.
  
• 
  Process and document verification results accurately within electronic medical record (EMR) and workflow systems.
  
• 
  Submit, track, and follow up on initial and ongoing authorization requests as needed.
  
• 
  Maintain organized records of pending verifications, authorizations, and unresolved insurance issues.
  
• 
  Communicate insurance verification and authorization updates to clinical, intake, billing, and operations teams.
  
• 
  Identify potential coverage or reimbursement concerns and escalate issues appropriately.
  
• 
  Manage multiple patient accounts and tasks simultaneously while meeting productivity and accuracy expectations.
  
• 
  Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable healthcare regulations.
  

Required Qualifications

• 
  High school diploma or equivalent.
  
• 
  Minimum of 2 years of healthcare insurance benefits verification experience.
  
• 
  Experience performing comprehensive benefits investigations as a primary job responsibility in a high-volume environment.
  
• 
  Ability to independently obtain and interpret detailed insurance benefits beyond basic eligibility checks, copay collection, or authorization processing.
  
• 
  Strong understanding of deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, copays, coinsurance, coverage limitations, and authorization requirements.
  
• 
  Experience verifying Medicare and commercial insurance benefits.
  
• 
  Familiarity with major insurance carriers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare.
  
• 
  Experience navigating insurance payer portals, clearinghouses, and government eligibility systems.
  
• 
  Strong computer skills and ability to work efficiently across multiple applications and patient accounts.
  
• 
  Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  
• 
  Excellent communication, documentation, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  
• 
  Ability to make frequent outbound calls to insurance carriers and manage competing priorities.
  
• 
  Ability to work independently in a fully remote, fast-paced environment.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• 
  Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
  
• 
  Experience with Waystar/eSolutions or comparable insurance clearinghouse platforms.
  
• 
  Experience with Homecare Homebase or similar healthcare EMR systems.
  
• 
  Knowledge of Medicare and non-Medicare home health or hospice payer requirements.
  
• 
  Experience with commercial insurance portals and government payer systems.
  
• 
  Familiarity with federal, state, and accreditation requirements governing home health and hospice services.
