Jobs came back in May – and this is where they are
As coronavirus cases declined in some states, and public health restrictions eased and allowed businesses to re-open, the job market started to bounce back – even if mildly. There are still jobs out there and companies continue to hire.
Here’s what job seekers need to know about the May 2020 jobs report – and who’s hiring near you.
Data overview
- The unemployment rate declined from 14.7% to 13.3%
- Unemployment rates by demographics: whites (12.4%), Asians (15%), Blacks (16.8%), Hispanics (17.6%)
- Temporary layoff decreased from 18 million to 15.3 million
- Permanent job losers increased from 2.05 million to 2.3 million
- 70.8% of the total unemployed have been jobless 5 to 14 weeks
Top companies hiring now
Employers with the most jobs open include CRST International, Amazon, Assurance IQ, Home Instead and Army National Guard, among others.

Many industries are seeing an increase in job postings, with these three at top:
- Food services and drinking places rose by 1.4 million, accounting for about half of the gain in total nonfarm employment. Find jobs in food services here.
- Leisure and hospitality increased by 1.2 million – find hospitality jobs here.
- Construction employment increased by 464,000 in May, gaining back almost half of April’s decline, which saw 995,000 jobs lost. Find construction jobs here.
Other industries on the rise: education and health services, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, professional and business services, finance, wholesale trade, couriers and messengers, transit, and ground passenger transportation.
