Areas of study may include, but are not limited to, molecular and cellular disease mechanisms, metabolic dysfunction, including beta cell inflammation and stress responses, translational strategies for diagnosis and treatment (e.g., GLP-1 receptor agonists and approaches to mitigate side effects), artificial intelligence (AI) applications in disease modeling and prediction, the microbiome’s role in metabolic disease progression, digital pathology, biomarker discovery, and clinical decision support systems. The UFDI and Pathology Department research laboratories are well supported by experienced technical staff (e.g., certified/licensed technicians, graduate-level and post-doctoral trainees, pathology assistants, administrative support staff), with a modern bio-banking facility supported by well-established programs for the collection of peripheral blood and tissues from living study participants and organ donors, respectively.
