JOB OBJECTIVE: To promote a safety culture through practicing safe and healthful work practices. The Zoo Safety Ranger is responsible for assisting the Safety and Training Coordinator in safety operations including but not limited to responding to emergencies with guests or staff, performing safety audits, incident investigations, and patrols grounds to ensure safety and security for guests and staff. The Zoo Safety Ranger position must maintain a visible and approachable attitude, in order to meet the needs of our guests and staff.

This position is not designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is not subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Minimum Qualifications, Additional Requirements and Supervisory Responsibilities

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of high school, and continuing education training (1) year of experience in occupational safety and health or security or law enforcement; (1) year of computer experience. Certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED. OSHA 10 hour course or suitable safety training (OSHA 10 hour course and First, Aid, and CPR may be obtained after employment). Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work different shifts, weekends, evenings, and special events.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older (may make unique exceptions based on prior experience).
  • Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D Drivers License

Regular part-time employees who work 1,500 hours shall receive six (6) days of Sick Leave upon the completion of the 1,500 hours. If unused, this Sick Leave shall be allowed to accumulate to a maximum of fifteen (15) days (120 hours). Regular, full-time non-probationary employees who transfer to Regular, part-time positions will receive credit for the previous years service for purposes of Sick Leave accrual and may carry over accrued Sick Leave accrual up to the maximum noted above.

Regular part-time employees who were in pay status (vacation, sick leave, or actual hours worked) for at least 1,500 hours during the year shall receive the following Vacation Leave:

Up to 10 years of service (40 hrs.) = 5 days per year

10 years or more (60 hrs.) = 7-1/2 days per year
