The Position

Job Appointment: Full-Time

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am-5 pm. An alternate schedule may be available.

Hybrid/work location: This role will report to The Portland Building 1120 SW 5th Avenue, Portland OR 97204 for in-person work. School site visits will be required.

The Safe Routes to School Youth Program Coordinator creates programs that provide opportunities for high school students to build transportation skills, explore their city using multimodal options, and become leaders in shaping safer streets and school communities. This position develops youth-oriented and youth-driven programming that combines transportation education, civic engagement, leadership development, and real-world travel experiences.

The Youth Program Coordinator partners closely with youth, internal teams, school districts, school communities, and community partners to develop programming that empowers youth voices and participation in designing Portland.

The successful candidate is a member of the Safe Routes to School Section within the Portland Bureau of Transportation's (PBOT) Mobility and Safety Programs (MSP) Division.

What you'll get to do:

  • Co-develop with high school students innovative programming that builds confidence, independence, and lifelong mobility skills.
  • Facilitate youth leadership opportunities and peer-to-peer education opportunities through our BIKETOWN Youth Ambassador program.
  • Design programs and outreach that help students and families use multimodal transportation options during the transition from middle school to high school.
  • Partner internally and externally to support e-bike safety and e-scooter education and engagement efforts.
  • Lead collaboration with other City of Portland staff and partners to include youth voices and engagement in PBOT's projects, programs, and planning. Examples include walk audits and piloting infrastructure projects to address safety barriers.
  • Support in-classroom multimodal education with youth.

About the Division:

The Mobility and Safety Programs Division is located within Portland Bureau of Transportation's Policy, Planning and Projects group. The Division works to make streets safer and increase the number of people walking, bicycling, and taking transit; community-facing programs are central to this goal.

About Safe Routes to School:

Our Safe Routes to School program focuses on helping kids and their families walk, bike, and roll to and from school and around their neighborhoods. We use infrastructure improvements, engagement, and education to improve safety, decrease congestion, reduce climate impacts, and encourage physical activity. The Safe Routes to School program supports over 100 schools within five school districts.

The Safe Routes to School team works closely with the Vision Zero team to advance a shared goal of creating a transportation system where everyone can travel safely. Itis Portlands goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets. Both programs use a Safe System Approach to traffic safety. This approach anticipates human mistakes through five layers of redundancy - safe speeds, safe streets, safe people, safe vehicles, and post-crash response - so human mistakes do not lead to serious injury or death. Vision Zero is Portlands goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets

To Qualify

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their supplemental question responses and resume how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

  • Experience delivering some form of education or skill building (does not have to be specific to transportation).
  • Experience and comfort with community outreach and communication to diverse populations, particularly youth.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively with a moderate level of supervision.
  • Ability to communicate in multiple ways, including creating and delivering presentations, presenting at meetings and public events, developing written content, and speaking with members of the public.
  • Experience with standard computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of and personal experience with multimodal transportation (biking, walking, transit, or rolling).

Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable.

Education/Training:

High school diploma, or GED equivalent.

AND

Experience:

Two (2) years of additional education or relevant professional experience working with high school-aged youth. Internships can count towards the required number of years.

Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:

  • Bilingual.
  • Ability to create maps in GIS

This position is eligible for Language Pay Differential for qualifying employees.
