Job Summary:

The Yotie Oso Undergraduate Retention & Success (YOURS) AANHPI Student Achievement Program is a culturally responsive student success initiative at California State University, San Bernardino. YOURS supports the academic achievement, personal development, career readiness, cultural connection, and overall well-being of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) students, particularly those who are underserved or the first in their families to attend college.

The Student Assistant, Peer Mentor/Advocate is a student leadership position that helps YOURS participants successfully navigate college, develop a sense of belonging, connect with campus resources, and work toward their academic and personal goals. Student Assistant, Peer Mentors/Advocates build supportive relationships with students through individual mentoring, proactive outreach, group activities, workshops, cultural programming, and referrals to appropriate campus services.

Student Assistant, Peer Mentors/Advocates are not academic advisors, counselors, or mental-health professionals. They serve as trained, approachable peers who listen, share relevant experiences and strategies, help students understand their options, and connect them with professional support when needed.

This position is an excellent opportunity for students interested in mentoring, education, counseling, psychology, social work, public health, student affairs, cultural studies, community engagement, or related fields.

Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision of the Director, duties include but not limited to:

Peer Mentoring and Student Support

• Develop welcoming, supportive, and culturally responsive mentoring relationships with YOURS students.
• Assist professional staff in meeting with students through scheduled appointments and designated drop-in hours, offered in person and virtually as assigned.
• Help students navigate the transition to college and develop confidence, self-advocacy, resilience, and a sense of belonging at CSUSB.
• Share student centered strategies related to time management, goal setting, study habits, communication with faculty, campus involvement, and help seeking.
• Listen with empathy and without judgment while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Encourage students to recognize and draw upon their strengths, identities, lived experiences, and cultural community wealth.

Academic and Career Success

• Conduct proactive outreach to students through phone calls, email, and other approved communication methods.
• Check in with students regarding academic progress, adjustment to college, engagement, and support needs.
• Connect students with academic advising, tutoring, supplemental instruction, career services, scholarship opportunities, financial aid resources, and other appropriate services.
• Help students prepare for meetings with academic advisors and/or faculty and identify questions they may want to ask.
• Promote workshops and opportunities related to academic success, career exploration, internships, professional development, scholarships, and high demand career fields.

Programs, Workshops, and Community Building

• Assist with the planning, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of YOURS workshops, cultural programs, learning communities, and signature events.
• Assist in co-facilitating peer-led workshops, group conversations, and Talking Circles addressing topics such as identity, family expectations, belonging, academic stress, wellness, career development, and the college experience.
• Help create affirming spaces where students can build community, share experiences, and learn from one another.
• Support culturally relevant programs and events that celebrate the diversity of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
• Participate in outreach events, orientations, classroom presentations, tabling activities, and campus campaigns.
• Collaborate with the APIDA Center, First Peoples Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising, student organizations, and other campus and community partners.

Program Operations and Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate and timely records of mentoring contacts, outreach efforts, referrals, attendance, and program participation.
• Assist with collecting student feedback and other information used to evaluate and improve YOURS services.
• Attend required staff meetings, supervision sessions, professional-development activities, and program events.
• Communicate regularly with the YOURS program team regarding student trends, resource needs, and emerging concerns while respecting student privacy.
• Represent YOURS and CSUSB professionally and positively.
• Complete other related duties that support the goals of the YOURS AANHPI Student Achievement Program.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
• Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.

Required Qualifications:

• Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
• Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
• International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
• Eligible to work in the United States
• Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

• Ability to build positive relationships with students from diverse identities, cultures, backgrounds, and lived experiences.
• Ability to listen empathetically, maintain professional boundaries, and respond to sensitive situations appropriately.
• Dependable, organized, and able to manage responsibilities with limited supervision.
• Willingness to participate in required training, supervision, outreach, programs, and events.
• Ability to protect student privacy and follow university policies and program procedures.
• Commitment to cultural humility, inclusion, equity, and respect.
• Previous basic experience in peer mentoring, student leadership, tutoring, advising support, outreach, community engagement, or event programming.
• Understanding of or meaningful interest in the experiences, strengths, cultures, and needs of AANHPI students and communities.
• Familiarity with CSUSB academic and student-support resources.
• Basic experience assisting facilitating small-group conversations, workshops, presentations, or community-building activities.
• Interest in psychology, counseling, social work, public health, education, student affairs, ethnic studies, communication, or a related field.
• Bilingual or multilingual skills are welcomed but not required.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.90 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Driver's License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
