Looking for an opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience while continuing your education?

As a Year-Round Intern in Union Pacifics Technology Department, you will gain first-hand experience working in our Application Development, Cybersecurity, or Infrastructure/Platform teams. These teams enable business operations by building secure systems and platforms that provide employees and customers visibility and extend automation across one of Americas largest transportation and logistics networks.

In this role, you will have extensive contact with peers and opportunities to interact with senior leaders. Youll be able to apply technical skills, leadership abilities, and business knowledge to real-world projects while gaining valuable professional experience throughout the academic year.

Interns contribute to meaningful work by leveraging technologies and concepts such as Java, Data Networking, Data Science, and Cybersecurity principles to help solve problems and deliver value through project assignments.

This position is intended for students who are actively pursuing a degree while attending a college or university within commuting distance of Omaha, Nebraska, and are interested in building real-world technology experience throughout the academic year. During the academic year, this position offers a flexible schedule of approximately 20 hours per week. Interns are expected to work primarily onsite at Union Pacific Center in Omaha, Nebraska, with some flexibility for remote work as approved by their manager. Interns are also expected to work full-time in Omaha, Nebraska, during the summer portion of the internship.

The estimated wage for this position is $22 - $28 per hour. Final rate of pay will be based on several factors, including year of study, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Accountabilities

  • Learn and perform the core processes and work tasks required to build and support secure and highly available enterprise software applications and platforms
  • Participate in design sessions, sprint planning and code reviews
  • Track and maintain status of projects using tools such as JIRA
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts within departments and across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications - Required

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Completed, or will have completed by the start date of employment, coursework equivalent to at least one year toward an undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, MIS, or a related field.
  • Currently attending a college or university within commuting distance of Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Ability to work on-site at a Union Pacific office in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic organization, prioritization, and time/project management skills.

Qualifications - Preferred

  • Experience in an object-oriented programming language, such as Java, Python, or C++

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires extended periods of sitting and extended hours in front of computer screens
  • Maintains concentration, focuses on tasks and can make timely decisions

Work Conditions
