JOB TITLE: Transportation Mechanic I - Wrecker Fuel and Bus Driver

SALARY: Based on State and Local Salary Schedule - Transportation Mechanic I
STATUS: 12 months
SUMMARY
The job of Transportation Fuel Truck Tow Truck Operator Bus Driver & Tire Mechanic was established to perform complex duties in the operation, repair, and maintenance of the vehicles in the school transportation program. Most work is performed based on prior experience. The employee is expected to resolve problems of medium difficulty with little assistance while others may be referred to a supervisor. Most errors may be expected to be resolved by the employee.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
Refueling all Route Activity Buses.
Inspect and report safety concerns.
Mount dismount rotate align and balance tires.
Assist mechanics with PM&rsquos as needed on bus fleet.
Wash buses completely as needed.
Assist with the upkeep of all county vehicles.
Transport buses to and from the garage as needed for maintenance.
Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribed route in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
Towing any buses or vehicles as prescribed by Transportation.
May operate a special ramp bus, load and unload students in wheelchairs on and off bus, inspecting wheelchair for operational safety, operates ramp positions and secures wheelchair in bus.
Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to district policy.
Performs periodical safety drills as required by law, completing necessary reports upon request.
Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition.
Completes periodic mileage and other reports, including passenger counts.
Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid, and training updates as required.
Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of North Carolina Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma GED and 1 – 2 years of training or experience in repair and maintenance of automotive equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
NC CDL Class A Combination license required Tanker Passenger and School Bus endorsement required NCDOT Medical Certification Card required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Requires the ability to pass and be certified for 30 Day Inspection Class. Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional structural or composite characteristics of data, people, or things. Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, logs, lists, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, lists, etc. using prescribed formats. Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in writing, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Considerable knowledge of school bus and vehicles operation and maintenance. Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines. Considerable knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment. Skills to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to physically perform most repairs. Sufficient education and experience to demonstrate possession of the needed knowledge and abilities. Pass pre-employment drug screening. Pass random drug and alcohol screenings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and listen. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds or more at times.
